My family recently received Hasbro’s Scrabble Alphabet Scoop game. We have played the game several times already. It’s a really easy game to pull out and set up for a quick play time. Although it is recommended for ages 6 and up, even my 4 year old can play — and he’s even learning his letters as we go! We have found this to be a good educational game that can be tailored to each player’s skill level by selecting longer words on the card for the older kids and shorter words from the card for younger kids.

The rules of the game are simple: Scoop letters out of the alphabet soup pot with your spoon and match them to the word on your card. The first one to get all the letters for their word puts the lid on the pot and says, “Yummy!” Each time you win a word, you keep the card. The first person to collect 4 cards wins the game.

Oh – and be sure to watch out for the FLIES in the soup pot! If you scoop out an orange fly tile, you have to put back ALL of your tiles, even ones you have already matched on your card.

My boys really like this game and I like that they can both play it. Lots of our games are not quite simple enough for my 4 year old to play and he feels left out. Scrabble Alphabet Scoop lets him join in on the family fun at game time.  Although he doesn’t know all his letters yet, he can still match the letters on the card to the ones he pulls out of the soup pot.  My older son can read and spell, so he enjoys the challenge of seeing how fast he can scoop the right letters out of the pot.

The only constructive criticism I have for Hasbro’s Scrabble Alphabet Scoop Game is to help provide an easier storage solution. All of the game pieces fit perfectly inside the soup pot with the lid on it. Perhaps you could add a locking lid on the pot? I currently slide the whole pot into a large Ziploc bag and close it so we don’t lose any pieces. A locking lid would make this game perfect!

PURCHASE SCRABBLE ALPHABET SCOOP (approx. $19.99)

  1. I love me some Scrabble! And how cool that the 4 year old can also play and learn – and he doesn’t even know it!
