I am really excited to add The Complete Photo Guide To Hand Lettering and Calligraphy by Abbey Sy to my growing collection of books about calligraphy and hand lettering. Thank you to The Quarto Group for providing me with a copy in exchange for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book is for new letterers and calligraphers AND anyone wanting to develop their lettering skills beyond the basics. It is nearly 200 pages long, and filled with everything you need to know to make personalized projects.
Six chapter topics include:
- Tools and Materials
- Lettering Primer
- Classic Calligraphy
- Modern Hand Lettering
- Decorative Lettering
- Digital Lettering
Plus, there are 30+ skill practice sheets and 14 step-by-step tutorials for creative lettering projects you’ll want to try. There are hundreds of color photographs to help you visualize everything you read about along the way.
I like how I can use this book as a reference for whatever kind of lettering I am doing and/or want to learn more about by going to the specific chapter. There’s no need to read the book cover to cover. For example, when I wanted to learn more about Digital Lettering, I headed straight for Chapter 6.
Everything I needed to know to get started with Digital Lettering is there in Chapter 6. Abbey tells you the tools you need and explains skills like Scanning, Editing, Drawing Letterforms, Special Effects, and Adding Dimension. Plus, there are digital lettering projects at the end of the chapter to put my new skills to use.
