I have partnered with Alarm.com to share smart home security tips. All opinions expressed in the blog post are my own.
A few weeks ago, my family went out of town for a last minute getaway before the new school year started. We packed up the car, dropped our dog off at the kennel, and had been driving about two hours when my husband suddenly asked me, Did you remember to lock the front door?
Me: I thought you were the last one out of the house…didn’t you check all the doors to make sure they were locked?
Husband: No, I thought YOU were doing it.
Me: —-(deep breaths)—-
The funny part about all this is that it seems like we have this conversation just about every time we go somewhere. No matter how organized we try to be, something important – like locking the doors – gets forgotten in the hustle and bustle of leaving the house.
The not-so-funny part about all this is that when you’re on vacation, the last thing you want to do is worry about your home security.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could do stuff like lock our home’s doors from anywhere, using our mobile device? I know it would give me a lot of peace of mind to know my home is secure. Whether you are going to work or going on vacation, Alarm.com makes it easy for busy families to protect their home with Smarter Home Technology.
About a year ago, we installed indoor and outdoor home security cameras (See tip #5). I love that I can check and see what’s going on at our house anytime. It’s awesome! I even use the camera to check on my kids when they are at home and I am away. It’s one of my favorite mom hacks for making sure the kids are behaving for the babysitter.

One of my favorite expert tips for avoiding potential intruders while you are away from home is to make your house looks lived in (See tip #4). Check out my list for more smart ways to protect your family and home while you’re away.
1. Keep the garage door closed and locked.
One of the Alarm.com advantages is the control for door locks and garage doors. I can use my smartphone to check on the status of our home’s doors and garage and know if they’re secured or not. And – better yet – I can set an alert and get a reminder if I leave home and forget to close the garage door!
2. Turn on the lights.
A well-lit home can deter potential intruders. A smart home system that lets you control your lights from an app is such a convenient way for today’s families to protect their home. Alarm.com’s Smart Schedules allows you to create personalized schedules to automate lights and thermostats based on the time and day of week. They even let you vary the times slightly when you’re away so it doesn’t look like your lights are on a timer.
3. Install a security system.
Homes without security systems are statistically more likely to be broken into. Alarm.com is the leading technology provider of smart home security and trusted by millions of people every day to protect their home or business. Alarm.com is sold through a nationwide network of trusted service providers. You can find service providers in your area by visiting Alarm.com.
4. Stop the mail (and any other deliveries.)
Nothing says, “Nobody’s home” like a pile of packages sitting on your front porch. Contact your post office and any other delivery services to stop your service while you are away from home.
5. Install home security cameras.
Camera monitoring lets you see what’s happening at your property in real time. Use Alarm.com’s Video Monitoring service and get instant alerts with smart clip capture and never miss a moment with continuous recording. Easily and instantly check up on the kids, your pets and valuables, and see what’s actually happening in the event of an alarm.
6. Lock everything – including all doors, windows, and pet exits.
Never leave your house key under the mat again. Use a Smart Lock so you can create user entry codes and lock or unlock your doors from anywhere with the Alarm.com mobile app.
7. Get alerts and reminder notifications from your house.
Set custom notifications to see only what you care about. For example, set a notification to be notified anytime the dog walker arrives, or get a no-show alert if the kids don’t get home by a certain time. Alarm.com’s interactive Smarter Home Security is an invaluable tool for today’s busy family lifestyles.

Great review! I love the fact that you can have the lights turning on and off but not at the same time everyday. That does get fishy if someone was “casing the joint”. I didn’t know Alarm.com had such a huge following. That speaks pretty loudly to how great of a service they provide. Have you had any glitches or anything that you didn’t like about the system yet?

These are some great tips! I like the reminder about the mail the most because it’s often the one that is forgotten the most.

Thank you, Crystal. I often forget about the mail, too. I should have included in the blog post (in case you’re interested) that the USPS has a “Hold Mail” form that you can fill out online quick and easy. –Nicole

I’ve often thought we should have a home security system, even though we live in a very safe area. It just seems to be nice for peace of mind. Good tips here!

Great tips! It’s always important to think about these things when you’re going away – even to just the market in today’s world. #HomeMattersParty

Thanks, Jamie! I know, it is pretty sad that we have to worry about our home’s safety even when we will only be gone an hour. With the holiday season coming up, I hope everyone will be even more watchful for suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

Hi Nicole! Very smart tips! We’ve never had a security system or cameras, but I can see how they could be very helpful. We do lock up and we use timers on the lights when we’re gone. And we either hold mail delivery or have a neighbor pick it up. I always like to let a neighbor know when we’re going to be away, too, so they can keep an eye out for any unusual activity. Pinning this post. Thanks!

Hello, Nicole! Excellent advice! We’ve never had a security system or cameras installed, but I can understand how they may be really beneficial. When we go, we lock up and set timers for the lights. And we either postpone mail delivery or have it picked up by a neighbour. I usually make a point of informing a neighbour when we’ll be gone so they can keep an eye out for any strange activities. This is something I’m going to pin. Thanks!
