Our Trip To Petco (Kids Beg For Guinea Pig)
We recently visited our local Petco and came THISCLOSE…I mean SOVERYCLOSE to bringing home a hermit crab…until the boys saw the very cool looking lizard, to which I emphatically cried, NO LIZARDS IN THE HOUSE!) and then for some reason (fear, I think) I tried to get them away from the Reptile section by suggesting we check out something furry and cuddly like the Guinea Pigs.
MISTAKE. BIG MISTAKE.
There was this adorable guinea pig that even I had to admit kept looking at us with hopeful, sweet guinea pig eyes that seemed to say, “Please take me home with you!” Don’t believe me? Take a look:
So now the kids are begging for this cute little animal and I’m falling for it, too. We even picked out a name for it…and so then I find myself texting my husband to ask where we would keep a guinea pig in the house…we are GETTINGSUPERCLOSE to becoming guinea pig owners.
REALITY CHECK.
I suddenly realize I know nothing about guinea pigs and cannot purchase a pet on a whim (no matter how stinkin’ cute it is).
So I peeled my boys away from the cage and got them into the car with promises of “Mommy’s going to do some research on guinea pigs and we’ll see if that is the right pet for us.” My oldest son is almost 9 years old and wants to take care of the guinea pig…is he ready for this type of responsibility? I’m still thinking about it. Pets are a big commitment. Am I ready for this?
What do you think? Any guinea pig owners out there with experience to share? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Guinea Pigs are so sweet! But they need a very large cage (minimum 2×4) and need to be kept in pairs. they must always have fresh Timothy hay and nail trimmings. I recommend a C&C cage or a.Midwest cage. Fleece bedding is cheap and easy. I Think a nine year old alone couldn’t do.it, but with your help it would.be great. I asking recommend adopting from.a rescue. I adopted my sweet little trio of boys from the LA guinea.pig rescue, and they cost less than pet store pigs and are friendlier.
