Apple Butter Recipe
Simmer apples on the stove with brown sugar and spices for a true, old-fashioned apple butter spread.

  1. Wash, core and chop apples into about 1 inch pieces.
  2. In a medium pot, combine apples and apple cider. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until the apples are tender.
  4. Remove from heat and put apples through the food processor or blender to puree.
  5. Use a measuring cup to add the apple puree back to the pot, adding 1/2 cup packed brown sugar for every 1 cup of apple puree.
  6. Mix in the lemon juice. Simmer the apple puree over low heat, stirring frequently for 30 to 45 minutes, or until thickened. *Stir in the spices during the last 10-15 minutes of cooking time.
  7. Optional: Test for doneness by putting a tablespoon of the apple butter onto a cool plate. If the apple butter holds together as it cools, it is ready.
