How To Make Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

Is it an ice cream cone? Is it a cupcake? There’s only one way to find out! Take a bite out of these delicious and easy to make ice cream cone cupcakes. Okay, so there’s really more than one way to find out…obviously, a real ice cream cone would quickly melt. Amaze your friends and family with these cupcakes that look like ice cream cones – guaranteed to make them wonder!

What’s an ice cream cone cupcake? It’s a cupcake that is baked right in a regular ice cream cone. It’s a super fun way to serve cupcakes, especially at kids’ birthday parties.

I read about different methods to bake ice cream cone cupcakes, but decided on this one since it’s easy and in my opinion, the best. The main obstacle is finding a way to keep the cones steady for baking and decorating. You know how those pesky ice cream cones like to fall over and ruin themselves.

Want to bake these at your house? I’ll show you how you to turn your muffin pan into an ice cream cone baking pan, plus pass along some helpful tips for success!

Helpful Tips for Making Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

Tip #1: Use flat bottomed ice cream cones. They are just plain easier to deal with than the pointy ones.

Tip #2: Do not overfill the ice cream cone with cake batter. I filled my cones about to the line where the stem part of the ice cream cone meets the rim.  That left at least 1/2 an inch clearance at the top for the cake to rise.

Tip #3: Use foil and a muffin pan as shown below when you bake the cupcakes.

Tip #4: Have a plan for how you want to display your ice cream cone cupcakes. There are a few options. 1) You can leave them in the muffin tin you baked them on. 2) You can carefully remove them from the muffin tin and carefully balance them on a serving platter. 3) You can use a cupcake stand similar to this one that has “holes” in it to stick the cones through.

Bake your cupcakes about 15-20 minutes or until they are done. Remove from oven and allow to cool before frosting. I use a Norpro Cupcake Injector with icing tips on it to decorate mine. Try to make the icing shape like a real ice cream cone looks. Add extras like sprinkles as desired!

    I tried making these cupcakes today. The chocolate ones were a major fail. the vanilla worked pretty well. But the chocolate ate its way through the side of the cone and just ended up flush with the top and sloped down the side. Best Description, my chocolate turned into an erupting volcano with lava drifting down the side. Not sure whether it was my chocolate recipie or the position in the oven (chocolate in back, vanilla in front). I’ll have to play around when I have more time to experiment. 🙂 Thanks for the hints on everything though! Your stabilzation tips helped tremendously!!

    These are some of the cutest things I have ever seen! My great-niece will be celebrating her fourth birthday in a few months and I would / will love to make these for her. She will flip.
