Betty Crocker LogoI don’t take a lot of time to focus on cooking dinner. I like fast and easy meals that I can whip out for the entire family in 30 minutes or less. Even though I don’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, I still like to eat a well-rounded dinner with a main dish and at least one side dish. My favorite easy side dishes are:

  • Rice
  • Steamed Veggies
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Baked French Fries (the kids)
  • Mashed Potatoes

I like to keep all of the above on hand because honestly, they are so fast and easy to make, plus can pair with just about any main dish. You’ll notice mashed potatoes is on the list. Although mashed potatoes made from scratch are good to eat, they take a lot of time to make. So when I say “mashed potatoes,” I’m talking about the delicious instant potatoes that come in a box…like Betty Crocker’s Specialty side dishes.

Betty Crocker Side Dishes Potatos

It takes at least an hour of nearly constant work to make mashed potatoes from scratch. It takes about 5 minutes to make Betty Crocker’s instant potato side dishes. All I do is boil the water, add the potatoes and milk and stir. It’s done! And if you put me in a blindfolded taste test, I would not be able to tell you which potatoes were made “from scratch” or from the box.

My family received the Betty Crocker Mashed Roasted Garlic potatoes. They have a slight garlicky taste that means if you like garlic, you’ll like this flavored side dish…if you don’t like garlic, then you may not. I paired these with Chicken and Apple Sausages for one of my famous 10 minute meals! (Okay, so it’s not really famous…but it does only take me 10 minutes to make from start to finish.)

Betty Crocker has a whole line of mouth-watering potato side dish flavors including:

  • Ultimates Loaded Mashed
  • Ultimates Au Gratin
  • Mashed Homestyle Creamy Butter
  • Mashed Roasted Garlic
  • Scalloped Potatoes
  • Au Gratin Potatoes

I’m really wanting to try the Ultimates Loaded Mashed potatoes – I bet those are really good! Which flavor(s) sounds good to you? What are your favorite side dishes?

“It takes at least an hour of nearly constant work to make mashed potatoes from scratch.”
Have you ever made mashed potatoes from scratch? They take 20 minutes to boil (which is definitely not “constant work”), and maybe 5 minutes to mash… “At least an hour” is a bit of an exaggeration, that’s why I ask. Either you’ve never done it, or your using an overcomplicated recipe.

    • Nicole says

      December 9, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Yes, I have made them from scratch many times. It takes me time to peel and cut them before I boil them for at least twenty minutes or until they are done. And I do have to be in the kitchen with them constantly to watch and make sure they don’t boil over. Then I have to get the masher out and mash them and make any additions to them. And note that I did say “NEARLY CONSTANT work”. Although maybe an hour of my time is slightly rounding up – but making mashed potatoes from scratch is not a simple process, at least for me. Good for you that you are so efficient making mashed potatoes, but really there’s no need to get all catty in my blog’s comments about it. It’s only mashed potatoes, no need for controversy, Ashley.

I love all things Betty Crocker. I have used most of their side dishes. But I disagree on how long it takes to make mashed potatoes from scratch. Yes it does take a little time to peel and cut the potatoes. I cook them in the microwave while I fix the rest of the dinner. Then mash with a fork with some butter and cream. My husband is always amazed when I make them from scratch. But I also like the Betty Crocker potatoes.
