Easy Science Experiments For Kids: How to Make Slime

August 13, 2015 by Nicole

science experiments for kids

Science experiments are a fun way to let kids have a hands-on learning experience. One of our favorites is making slime. We’ll show you how to make slime with common household ingredients: Borax (natural laundry detergent booster), white school glue and food coloring. Kids of all ages can have fun measuring, pouring, and stirring the ingredients.

Educational Play with Slime

Playing with slime is a sensory play experience. The slime allows kids to use all five senses, especially touch. Young children love to explore textures through play. They also build fine motor skills as they use their hands and fingers to manipulate the slime. Encourage language development in children by asking them to use words to describe slime. Is it sticky? Cold? Runny?
How to Make Slime (also known as the homemade GAK recipe)

What You’ll Need:

  • 8 ounces of Elmer’s White School Glue
  • 1 teaspoon Borax (natural laundry detergent booster)
  • Very Warm water (1 cup and 1/2 cup)
  • Food Coloring
  • Optional: Glitter *We added glitter to our slime, but found out you can’t really see it unless you use clear glue

3 Ingredient Slime Recipe

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix 8 ounces of glue with 8 ounces of very warm water.slime glue
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring. Stir.slime food coloring
  3. In a separate bowl, mix 1/2 cup of very warm water to the Borax. Stir until Borax is dissolved.slime with borax
  4. Slowly pour the Borax/Water mixture from Step 3 into the Glue/Water/Food Color mixture. Stir constantly and watch as the mixture becomes solid and stringy. Continue to mix, using your hands. The mixture will start feeling like gel. Knead the mixture for a few minutes, until it reaches the perfect slime texture.slime recipe stir

Your slime will be stretchy and gooey, but it won’t leave a mess behind. Let the kids play with it (they will love squishing it around) and store in an airtight container when you are done. Try making another batch of slime and use a different food coloring. We made blue and green slime!
