I have never had a professional microdermabrasion treatment, so I will not be able to compare my at home personal microdermabrasion treatment with one I received from a doctor, salon or spa. However, I will be able to tell you about my experience using the PMD (Personal Microderm) and how it works for me.
When I learned that professional microdermabrasion treatments can cost thousands of dollars per year, I was even more interested in learning to do it myself. I love at-home spa treatments and I’m all for anything that will help my skin look younger and healthy. The PMD can give my skin the same results as a professional treatment.
My PMD device and Exfoliating Discs
The PMD device is very similar to what doctors and salons use for professional treatments, so it is very important to use it correctly. It uses the same aluminum oxide crystals as the expensive machines do to smooth away dead skin cells, diminish age spots and other signs of aging. It also treats acne and scarring.
Using the PMD was intimidating at first. I was afraid I would do it wrong and hurt my skin. The PMD comes with instructions and a “How To Use” DVD that you should watch before attempting any treatments. The video explains and simplifies the entire process. I felt a lot better about trying to use it after reading the instructions a couple of times and watching the DVD.
My Practice Treatment
I used the white-colored “Training Caps” (included with the PMD) the first two times I attempted an at-home treatment because I wanted to be sure I felt comfortable using the PMD and was using it correctly. I also took a few minutes to do a “test spot” to see how my skin would react to the personal microderm treatments. Everything went well and I’m glad I took the time to practice. It made me feel more comfortable to switch to using the blue-colored caps on my face for a “real” treatment.
No More Practice, Time For the Real Treatment:
The PMD is actually quite easy to use. The colored Exfoliating Discs are simple to switch out (use small ones for face, large ones for body). The actual treatment process takes me less than 10 minutes from start to finish on my face. In my opinion, the most important things to remember when using the PMD are to:
- Stretch your skin taut with your hand or fingers to the PMD can glide over your skin
- Keep the PMD moving over your skin – do no let it remain in one area
- Resist the temptation to “go back over” the same areas of skin
- Wait 6-7 days between treatments to give skin time to rejuvenate
I have done 2 “real” treatments with my PMD. I think it will take several treatments to see noticeable improvement in my skin. Since the PMD does not promise immediate results, I was not expecting to be wow’d the first few times I used it. The benefits of personal microdermabrasion treatments will appear over the next few weeks as my skin continues to renew itself after each exfoliating session with the PMD. I get better with the PMD every time I use it.
The PMD benefits include:
- Improvement in skin’s surface, ton and texture
- Improvement in skin’s visible imperfections such as sun damage, blemishes, fine lines and dark spots
- Skin Care products become more effective when combined with microdermabrasion
After each PMD treatment, I use a toner (as suggested in the instructions) to help restore the pH balance and calm my skin. I did not experience any skin irritation or other adverse reaction, which I feel is because I took the time to make sure I was using the PMD properly. I feel completely comfortable giving myself at-home personal microdermabrasion treatments now.
