Isn’t this a gorgeous view? It is a photo of Wonder Lake, an amazing sight in Denali National Park that I have yet to see in person. The Wonder Lake area is located pretty far down the Denali Road, a road that only the Denali park buses can travel during the summertime. However, one time per year in September, personal vehicles have permission to drive the Denali Road IF they win a one day special permit pass in the Denali Road Lottery.
My family has entered every year for the past 6 years, but we have yet to win. There are only about 1600 permits available – but we are hoping one of these years we will get lucky. My husband and I joke that our Denali Road Lottery entry fee is our annual donation to the National Park Service since we never get picked to win. But I’m crossing my fingers that we may get a road permit this year.
For anyone else interested in applying for the Denali Road Lottery, it can be done online, over the phone, or by mail between June 1 and June 30, 2011. The drawing will be held around July 15, 2011.
Keep your fingers crossed for us – maybe 2011 will be our lucky year. And if it’s not, I’m sure we’ll try again next year — one of these years we’ll make it to Wonder Lake in September!
