Today’s Disney Family Movie daily review is all about Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, which is now playing in theaters! We’re going to be reviving Sparky with a behind-the-scenes featurette now playing on Disney Family Movies.
Artist and author Tim Burton has been responsible for some of the cinema’s most kooky and enjoyable films— Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman and Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, to name a few— but in 1982 he was just a young animator at Walt Disney Studios, unhappy with his work on larger films. While there Disney did make and his release his now classic black-and-white short film Vincent, in which a young boy fancies himself Vincent Price, with, yes, Vincent Price providing the narration. (Check out Vincent in Vincent.)
Two years later, in 1984, Burton made another black-and-white short, this one about a young boy, appropriately named Victor Frankenstein, who revives his beloved dead dog, Sparky. It went so well that after the short, Burton was fired. (You can see the original Frankenweenie short.)
Then, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Big Fish. Alice in Wonderland. Yup, Tim Burton became a genius. (See Tim Burton’s Disneyland visit.)
So Frankenweenie— just like that lovable mutt Sparky!— is back, this time in theaters as a feature film, including in spooktacular 3-D.
