Whenever I try to think of healthy snacks for kids, this simple fruit salad comes to mind. I have a couple of picky eaters at my house, but luckily they all like to eat most kinds of fruit. And they all love yogurt. I grab whatever fruit we have on hand and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Then mix it up with a spoonful or two of yogurt. Strawberry or plain vanilla yogurt works best for us, but you can use your favorite flavor.
Some of our lovely friends recently gifted us with huge boxes of citrus. I have been trying to find ways for us to eat all of these oranges. Fresh fruit salad is a fast way to use up fruit before it goes bad. Kids and adults will enjoy this light, refreshing snack. It’s also an easy breakfast idea to get the day off to a nutritious start.
Fun serving suggestion:
Use the hollowed out orange halves as orange bowls. Serve fruit salad in the orange peel bowls – it’s just fun that way and kids may be more likely to eat their fruit salad.
How to make fruit salad:
Ingredients
- 2 navel oranges
- 1 banana
- 2 apples
- 6 strawberries (hulled)
Directions
Wash and dry fruit and berries. In a medium-sized bowl: Slice oranges in half and scoop out the insides. Cut them into bite-sized pieces. Peel and slice bananas, apples and strawberries into bite-sized pieces and combine all fruit in the bowl.
Add half a cup (more or less as desired) yogurt to fruit and stir until lightly coated. My kids like it best when there’s just barely enough yogurt in the salad to even tell it’s in there. Serve immediately.
Optional: Fill orange peel “bowls” with fruit salad and serve.
