Wondering how to make hot chocolate bombs? It’s easier than you think. With these tips and a little practice, you will be making hot cocoa bombs like a pro!
The basic hot chocolate bombs recipe takes just a few ingredients: hot cocoa powdered mix, mini marshmallows, and semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Once you get the hang of how to make hot chocolate bombs, you can easily switch things up and make them different flavors. For example, try a flavored hot chocolate mix instead of regular.
We love Stephen’s Gourmet Candy Cane cocoa. It has little pieces of peppermint in it!
Or, add crushed peppermints and marshmallows to this Milk Chocolate Cocoa Mix. The flavor possibilities for this recipe are pretty much endless.
Simply switch up your toppings, cocoa flavors, and/or type of chocolate chips.
But, I’m gonna start by sharing the basic recipe.
Directions for making Variation: S’mores Hot Chocolate Bombs are listed in the recipe below.
How to make hot chocolate bombs
You will need a round silicone mold. The exact one I ordered from Amazon is this round silicone mold. Each finished hot chocolate bomb is about 2.5 inches in diameter.
Note: I would not use a mold that makes cocoa bombs bigger than 2.5 inches because the hot chocolate bomb needs to be able to fit into a mug.
HELPFUL TIP: I keep our hot chocolate bombs safe inside these deep lidded containers like these inside our freezer. I take them out a few minutes before we want to use them.

With these tips and a little practice, you'll be a hot cocoa bomb pro!
Ingredients
- Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Mini Marshmallows
- Powdered Hot Chocolate Mix
- Optional For S'mores Hot Chocolate: Crushed Graham Crackers
- Optional: Milk Chocolate Chips or White Chocolate Chips if you want to drizzle the tops with a different kind of chocolate.
Instructions
HELPFUL NOTES: It is easier to melt chocolate chips in small batches. One 10-12 ounce bag of chocolate chips is enough to make 6 hot chocolate bombs measuring 2.5 inches when finished.
I recommend having several bags of chocolate chips on hand so you don't run out. More chocolate chips will be needed to melt for the chocolate drizzle on top of the hot chocolate bombs, and to seal the top and bottom of the hot chocolate bombs together.
How To Make Hot Chocolate Bombs
1. Melt half a bag of chocolate chips (about 5 oz) in a small microwave safe bowl for 60 seconds. Remove from microwave and stir until chips are smooth. If chips are not stirring smooth after 60 seconds, put back in microwave for 15 more seconds. Stir again. Repeat this step in 15 second increments until chips are completely melted. Note: Chocolate chips should melt fairly quickly in the microwave. It usually takes 1-2 minutes or less.
Do not overcook chocolate chips or the chocolate will burn and “sieze up.” If this happens, you will need to start over with a clean bowl and new chocolate chips.
2. Use a spoon to apply a THIN, even coat of melted chocolate to the insides of the round mold. Be sure to completely coat the mold all the way up to the top edge.
Getting the chocolate layer "just right" (not too thick, not to thin) may take a little practice. It's better to make the chocolate layer too thin, and add a second thin layer of chocolate if needed.
HELPFUL TIP: The back of the spoon works great to coat the molds. However, I think it is even easier to use my clean fingers to spread the chocolate in the molds.
3. Allow the chocolate to cool and harden. You can speed up this process by putting molds in the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes.
4. Carefully remove the chocolate from the silicone molds. The chocolate cups should easily pop right out.
5. Add hot chocolate powder and marshmallows to the bottom half of the chocolate bomb.
Note: I use about a tablespoon of powdered hot cocoa mix and then fill the rest with marshmallows. The melted chocolate from the bomb will help turn hot milk chocolatey, so you don’t need much powdered cocoa mix.
PUTTING THE TOP AND BOTTOM TOGETHER AND SEALING
I have found two easy ways that work well to seal the chocolate bomb top to the bottom of the chocolate bomb.
Method 1: Put a microwave safe plate in the microwave and heat it for about 30-45 seconds. Take the top half of a chocolate bomb and set it on the warm plate (seam side down) for a few seconds so that the chocolate starts to melt. Quickly place the top half of the chocolate bomb onto the bottom half of the chocolate bomb and gently hold the two pieces together while the chocolate cools and seals the chocolate sphere together.
Method 2: Melt a couple of Tablespoons of chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl until stirred smooth (30-60 seconds.) Dip your finger (first make sure the chocolate isn't too hot so you don't get burned) OR a blunt knife into the melted chocolate and gently spread a thin layer of melted chocolate on the seam of the top half of the chocolate bomb.
Before the chocolate cools, quickly set the top half of the bomb on the bottom half and gently press together while the chocolate cools to create a seal.
NOTE: If your hot chocolate bomb has any thin areas or small holes that need a little extra coverage, this is an easy method to use to add thin layers of melted chocolate as needed.
THE FUN PART! DECORATE THE TOPS!
7. Now it’s time to decorate the tops of the hot chocolate bombs! I use a small ziploc baggie for this. But if you have cake decorator tips and bags, those will of course work, too.
First, melt a few tablespoons of chocolate (microwave for about 30 seconds and knead the bag to smooth the melted chips) Once the chips are smooth, use scissors to snip the corner of the ziploc bag just a tiny bit to allow the melted chocolate a way out.
To drizzle melted chocolate, gently squeeze the ziploc bag back and forth like a zigzag over the top of a chocolate bomb. Before the chocolate cools, work quickly to add toppings.
Examples of Toppings We Like To Use: Crushed graham crackers, mini marshmallows, crushed candy canes, colorful sprinkles.
VARIATION: S'mores Hot Chocolate Bombs Directions. Make basic hot chocolate bombs as directed, adding a teaspoon of crushed graham cracker crumbs to the powdered hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows inside before sealing. To decorate the tops, drizzle melted chocolate on top and sprinkle with crushed graham cracker crumbs and mini marshmallows.
Once the chocolate is cooled and hardened, your hot chocolate bomb is finished!
8. Congratulate yourself on making one of the most fun, totally giftable hot chocolate treats EVER invented. Be sure to store hot chocolate bombs in a safe, cool place.

more of my rambling tips…
I have made hot chocolate bombs several times now, and so far have the best luck using dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Milk chocolate chips will work for this recipe, but I think the semi-sweet chips came out more successfully.
I have plans to make hot cocoa bombs using a mix milk chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips. I think that a mix of milk and darker chocolate will work great and taste delicious.
Chocolate candy melts work for this recipe, but the candy melt bombs definitely didn’t taste as good as real chocolate when they got melted in milk.
My kids do NOT like the bombs made with candy melts. Use real chocolate or chocolate chips instead.
Mini Marshmallows vs Dehydrated Marshmallows
My thoughts about mini marshmallows vs dehydrated marshmallows.
We have made hot chocolate bombs with regular mini marshmallows and these dehydrated mini marshmallows. Both kinds of marshmallows are delicious and great for using in hot chocolate bombs!
We think using regular mini marshmallows on the INSIDE of the hot chocolate bomb makes for a better “explosion” in your mug. They are bigger and fluffier than dehydrated marshmallows so they really “pop out.”
We like using dehydrated marshmallows as decorations on TOP of the hot chocolate bomb. They are smaller, so you can easily sprinkle lots of them on top. They look really cute and taste great. (We could almost eat them by the handful!)
If you want to have more room inside the hot chocolate bomb for multiple flavor fillers, or if you simply just LOVE tons of marshmallows in your hot cocoa, use dehydrated marshmallows.
You can fit a lot more dehydrated marshmallows than regular mini marshmallows inside a hot chocolate bomb.
Regular, soft and squishy mini marshmallows are always the perfect addition to any hot chocolate!
