When the Kids Have a Sore Throat, Use This! + SayAhh! Promo Code

September 3, 2015 by Nicole

I know it is only a matter of time this cold and flu season before one of my kids will come up to me, clutching at their throat with a miserable look on their face, whispering, “Mom…my throat is hurting.” I will take a deep breath and think (probably out loud), “I sure hope you don’t have strep throat” and then, “Where’s the flashlight?”

There’s only one way to tell what’s going on with a sore throat – and that is to get a good look at it. I don’t know if you have ever tried to see someone’s tonsils in the back of their throat. It is pretty dark back there. You have got to have a flashlight aimed in to see. To find our flashlight, I usually have to dig through our camping gear. Of course, the flashlight batteries are ALWAYS dead, so then I have to find and replace the batteries. All the while my poor child is suffering a miserable sore throat.

And I haven’t even gotten to the part about me having to find some sort of household utensil that I can attempt to use as a tongue depressor. A spoon is too big, the toothbrush doesn’t work to get their tongue pushed down far enough, and both me and my sick child are feeling frustrated. Can you relate to this kind of experience?

There is good news for us parents who struggle to give our kids a home sore throat exam. It’s called SayAhh! Sore Throat Home Exam Aid.

Bring it on, cold season! I am ready for you!

I just added the SayAhh! Sore Throat Home Exam Aid to my family’s medicine cabinet. A doctor designed Say Ahh! as a more comfortable way to hold the tongue down and view the throat and tonsil areas during throat exams. I don’t want my kids to get a sore throat, but I do want to be prepared if they do. This can be used with children ages 6 and up.

SayAhh! has a unique curved shape to help relax the tongue and minimize the gag reflex. It is made of a softer material than traditional metal or wooden oral retractors. A SahAhh! makes it a lot easier for parents to see their child’s throat. There is also a useful chart with medical-grade illustrations and descriptions of six common childhood throat ailments (strep throat, coxsackie, mononucleosis, etc.) Plus, the SayAhh! Sore Throat Home Exam Aid even comes with a tiny flashlight – score for me!

Of course, because I am not a doctor, so I should not try to form a diagnosis based on any throat exam I perform myself. The SayAhh! is for me to use to examine my child’s throat and report what I see to the pediatrician or pharmacist. This can help them to know whether or not my child needs to come in for a professional visit. If they advise me to take care of the sore throat at home, I have just saved money by not having to pay a co-pay at the doctor’s office. And it is nice to avoid the chance of picking up even more germs sitting in the doctor’s waiting room if it isn’t necessary.

*The SayAhh! Exam Guide App is available in the Apple App Store and coming soon to Google Play.

Look inside my Kids Medicine Kit

I like to keep at least a few basic kids medicines on hand. I’m getting us ready for cold and flu season by stocking up on things like Children’s Acetaminophen (for fever and aches), sore throat lozenges (for my older kids), nasal saline spray and menthol ointment. It is better to be prepared than have to run to the store for medication when your child gets sick, especially if it is late at night.

Tools I keep in the kids medicine kit include the SayAhh! Sore Throat Home Exam Aid and a digital thermometer. Remember to always keep medicines out of children’s reach. What is in your medicine cabinet?
