Do you want to look great but not spend a fortune doing it? Here are some fashion tips for frugal fashionistas:
One Person’s Old is Another Person’s New
Vintage stores, charity shops, and swap meets could be a great place for you to get great clothing and accessories. Certain things will, of course, be out of the question unless they’re brand new but other items will be fine to buy second hand. Do you have a very trendy friend who always spends money buying new? Don’t hesitate to take her offered hand-me-downs!
Accessorise!
Trendy accessories paired with classic basic can make your whole outfit look trendy and fashionable. Hats, scarves with fancy knots, suspender tights or other funky tights or stockings, and a great bag can totally transform the look of your basic outfit and many of these things cost a minimal amount of money.
Use the Web
Subscribe to your favourite stores’ newsletters. They’ll send you details about upcoming sales and some will send coupon codes to help you save even more money.
Join money saving and fashion community forums as well. Many of these sites share information about great deals and finds.
End of Season Sales
Most fashion trends last more than one season. At the end of the season, great deals abound when retailers try to clear out for the next season’s styles. Use this to your advantage and buy things on sale to use next year. Tip: Be strategic in your organisation at home so you can find what you’ve stashed for next season!
Knock Offs / Discount Brands
Sometimes you need a quality brand but sometimes you can get away with a copy in terms of shoes, fragrances, and clothes. Shop around and do that regularly so you can find the best deals on the stuff with the designer tags and without.
Quality and Quantity
Quantity might sound good in terms of staying in style but quality will last. A good purse can last years rather than months. T-shirts don’t have to last ten years. A good pair of jeans will stand dozens and dozens of trips through the washer and dryer. If there’s a particular style you really like and /or one that is classic, buy quality. We did just suggest knock offs at times but in certain areas, it pays to pay for the name, particularly if it’s a well-reputed brand that has a guarantee and even some resale value.
Sell Your Old Stuff
Some clothes and shoes have great resale value long after you’ve grown tired of wearing them. There’s also the ability to sell some clothes that you’ve found on sale. Gotten a great deal on clearance items? Maybe sell a few. Bought two for one at a BOGO (buy one get one free) sale? Consider selling the second pair online. Selling old and extra items you don’t plan to wear each season can help you generate some extra cash to help you buy a few new pieces each season.
