I don’t claim to be an expert at much – but as someone who has lived 7 winters and counting in Alaska, I feel confident making recommendations about winter clothing and gear.
This winter, I have found a new love: my SKHOOP skirt (yes, I did say skirt – this one is made to be worn in the cold!). SKHOOP is a Swedish company that makes insulated skirts that quickly zip on and off over pants or leggings, which makes them a must have outerwear item for anyone who likes to keep their rear end and legs warm. Scandinavians know how to make awesome winter gear – and this is no exception.
The skirts come in a few different lengths: long, short and mini. My SKHOOP skirt is the long version called the “Hella”. It is the perfect length for keeping my legs warm anytime I’m spending time outside in the cold, whether it’s for a few minutes or a few hours. One thing I love about it (besides the added warmth it gives me) is the colorful embroidery that adds exactly the right touch of girly-ness.
Another thing I like about the Hella skirt is the material. It is a bit heavier and more durable than the Original skirt. It may even be a bit better at stopping wind than the Original skirt. (I have not tested that theory – I’m just basing that on what I thought when I compared the way the two materials looked and felt in the store.)
If you live in a cold climate, you need a SKHOOP skirt. I throw mine on over jeans, yoga pants, and tights anytime I need to go anywhere outside – even if it’s just a quick trip to the mailbox. The side zipper makes it super easy to get on and off over any of your clothing. I’ve even put it on over bulky ski pants to help keep me extra warm. You may think it sounds crazy to put a skirt on over your other winter clothing – but trust me, try it and you will quickly find the love for it that I did.
The Hella is made from 100% Nylon and has synthetic fill. They are a bit pricey (the Hella costs $139), but I have learned from experience that investing in quality gear is worth it.
I wear my Hella skirt just about everywhere these days. In fact, I just threw it on a little while ago for a quick walk around the neighborhood with my German Shepherd. I have to say, it’s nice to be able to wear a skirt in subzero temperatures and stay warm! Now that I know how much I love the Hella, I’m feeling the urge to try the new Mini SKHOOP.
Is it cold where you live? What do you think about the SKHOOP insulated skirt? Let me know in the comments – especially if you have one – I’d love to hear what you love about your SKHOOP.

My husband and I are going to Alaska in March (Ankorage, Fairbanks, & Barrow…my sis & bro-in-law live in Barrow). My sis recommended the Skhoop skirt as well. Can’t wait to see y’all’s beautiful country. (I’m from Texas, if you couldn’t tell.) 😉

Hey Kristy!
Have fun in Barrow – wow, I have never been that far North. You are brave! 🙂 Being from Texas heat, you will want to bring every item of clothing you own to layer up. haha The Skhoop skirt is one of my favorite Alaskan winter items. It will help block that cold wind, plus you can wear lots of pants layers underneath, too. Enjoy your trip! -Nicole
