Death by Chocolate Trifle Recipe

May 13, 2014 by Nicole

Death by Chocolate Trifle is one of the easiest desserts I have ever made. The wonderful thing about trifles is that they always look impressive when served in a clear trifle bowl that lets you see the layers. And the wonderful thing about this particular trifle is that it includes a LOT of CHOCOLATE. Don’t worry, it tones down all that luscious chocolatey flavor with layers of fluffy whipped topping and toffee bits.

I’m not sure who named this dessert “Death by Chocolate” but I’m hoping they were joking about the death part. At least I can tell you that no one died after eating this at my house. They just kept coming back for more!

What You’ll Need:

  • A 9×13 pan of brownies, cooked and crumbled
  • 2 (3.9 ounce) boxes of instant chocolate pudding, prepared according to package directions
  • 1 (16 oz.) Cool Whip
  • Toffee bits (I bought a bag but only used about half of it)
  • optional, but why not?: Hot Fudge (for drizzling)

LAYER everything together in order:

1/2 crumbled brownies

1/2 chocolate pudding

1/2 Cool Whip container

Sprinkle a thin layer of toffee bits.

Drizzle with hot fudge (optional).

Repeat.

Chill until ready to serve. *Note: You can make this dessert a day ahead of time.

Please don’t call this a Trifle it certainly is not. However I think it is a beautiful and delicious Chocolate Mix and a recipe that I have seen used with variations to the ingredients. Try it you’ll love it.

I love making this trifle to take when invited for supper and asked to bring the dessert. I use chocolate cake (9×13) instead of brownies and don’t drizzle with hot fudge. Always get compliments!

You’re welcome. My husband loves this – so I hope yours will too. Everyone always asks me to make this or my other “go to” trifle (Dirt Cake). I have that recipe posted on my site as well if you want to check that out. It’s made with crushed Oreos and pudding and cream layers. Let me know how it turns out if you make it. Thank you for stopping by. -Nicole
