If You Like The Hunger Games…Read The Enclave Series by Ann Aguirre

January 11, 2013 by Nicole

Just when I thought I had had enough of my YA dystopian fiction addiction, I came across the Enclave Series by Ann Aguirre. This exciting series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world not too far in the distant future. Most of humanity has been wiped out by a disease and …wait for it … zombies!

In the book, most people refer to the zombies as Freaks or Muties. No matter what you call them, we soon learn that these meat-eating humanoids are no longer mindless monsters – they are getting smarter and more capable every day, which is bad news for the human population.

*I’ll try not to reveal any major spoilers below, but still tell you a little bit about the story.*

Enclave is the first title in this series, and the story is told by a 15-year-old girl named Deuce. She was born and raised underground (in the former tunnels of New York’s subway system) in a small community/enclave. The group follows strict order and rules set by their leaders. Poor living conditions, disease, and Freak (zombie) attacks make survival extremely difficult. Most people in Deuce’s enclave die by their mid 20’s. Everyone in this society is taught to be fearful of going “Topside,” because it means certain death from whatever lurks there.

Deuce trained her entire childhood for her job assignment as a Huntress. This means she protects her people from Freaks as well as provides food for the group. And when I say food, I mean they trap and eat rats! The world as we know it has definitely gotten much, much worse.

She and her male hunting partner/budding love interest, Fade, discover something is changing about the Freaks. Something that could mean death for the enclave. They try to warn the enclave’s leaders, but no one seems to believe them.  Soon after that, Deuce and Fade are unjustly exiled from the group. This means they must try to survive Topside, where unknown dangers await them at every turn.

Find out what happens to them when you read Enclave.

My Recommendation:

If you are a fan of YA Dystopian Fiction, you do not want to miss out on the Enclave Series. It’s fast-paced and easy to read. If you like The Hunger Games, you will probably enjoy the world of Enclave, too. The dark plot, the gory imagery (think zombie massacres) make this an exciting and thrilling page turner. The second book in the four book series, Outpost, is also available now.

YA Books I Recently Finished and Also Highly Recommend:

The MazeRunner (series)

The Mortal Instruments (series)

I just finished book 2 of the Enclave series (Outpost) and it was even better than book 1. Although I really enjoyed both of the books a lot. Maybe I was just more invested in the characters by book 2 so I read it faster so I could find out how things turned out for them. Now I can’t wait for book 3 to be released!
I hope you like the series as much as I did. Thanks for stopping by.

I just finished reading book 2 of the series and I don’t want to spoil anything for you in case you read it … but by the end of book 2 we start to realize things are not what we think they are…OK that is all that I can say without further spoiling the fun! 🙂
