There are hundreds of thousands of blog posts about dishwasher detergent recipes. I set out looking for a recipe with simple, easy-to-find ingredients. I also needed it to be a liquid, not a powder, detergent. After reading tons of different recipes and hundreds of reader comments on how to make liquid dishwasher detergent, I decided to try this one first because it was easy, inexpensive and had lots of positive feedback.
I have washed about 7 loads of dirty dishes using this recipe and have had positive results. So far, no cloudy residue has shown up on my glasses. My dishes have always come out completely clean. It’s important to note that I have an amazing new Maytag dishwasher that could probably give me outstanding results no matter what detergent I use in it. It is an awesome machine!
I enjoy learning how to make my own eco-friendly cleaning products. It’s fun to experiment and it can save money, too. If you are looking for an easy, effective DIY dishwasher liquid, try this one!
Dishwasher Detergent Recipe
What You Will Need:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup liquid castile soap*
- 2 T. pure lemon juice (not concentrate)
Mix all 3 ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Shake bottle before use.
Use 2 T. per dishwasher load.
*I use Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap. It’s about $15 per 32 oz. bottle on Amazon, which is a little cheaper than I can find it in my local stores unless they are having a sale. One bottle this size will make several batches of this recipe.
Many people suggest using vinegar as a rinse agent with this homemade dishwasher liquid. I have not done that (yet) because I wanted to test this liquid dishwasher detergent recipe on its own. I love to use vinegar for laundry and cleaning, so I may start giving my dishes an extra oomph by using it as a rinse agent in the dishwasher.
Note: I tried the Almond scent for the first time, thinking I would like using it in the kitchen…but I do not really care much for this scent. The good news is that it is a light nutty scent that does not linger in the kitchen. However, I would suggest going with the Citrus, Lavender or Peppermint scent. That’s what I plan to do next time!
Please let me know if you try this recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent and how it works for you. I look forward to reading your comments and feedback!

Wowie! So now I know some of the secrets for the products they charge a huge amount. I totally enjoy making my own things, from sewing, to cooking from the basics (like making my own ricotta), candles, and I want to try this!!! Preferably with my nieces, perhaps they will enjoy doing dishes with their own detergent. I’d add a little fragrance, too, fresh & clean.
