We’re highlighting one great movie per day that’s currently playing on Disney Family Movies. Today it’s an animated double feature from 1949 that combines two beloved characters, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
Two spooky stories come to life— and come together— in these thrilling animated adaptations! First up, it’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Long before Captain Jack Sparrow (okay, actor Johnny Depp) played him on-screen Washington Irving’s haunted headless horseman rides through the night in a beautifully animated feature short given narration by the legendary Bing Crosby. The adaptation was much praised as being true to the plot and spirit of the original novella.
Next up (and fans of Toad Hall will want to pay attention here!) is a slightly less faithful but arguable more fun re-telling of Kenneth Grahame’s wonderful The Wind In the Willows in which Mr. Toad travels to “Nowhere In Particular” with his pals Rat, Mole and Badger. The whole escapade is voiced by the British acting legend Basil Rathbone (who many years later would provide inspiration for 1986’s The Great Mouse Detective), and serves as an inspiration for one of the Disney theme park’s most beloved rides: Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride! (Still operating at Disneyland today.)
It’s a double feature for the whole family! Settle in and enjoy the trailer.
When in Disneyland, be sure to visit Toad Hall!
