My family is so excited that summer vacation is here! It’s so nice to be able to wake up and have absolutely nothing we have to do and nowhere that we have to be at any certain time. I guess that is not always going to be the case because we do have activities like swim lessons and camp…but for the most part, I am happy to get a break from waking up to make school lunches and getting kids out the door by 7:45am. What about you? Are you enjoying summertime so far? I hope so!
Let’s talk vacation plans. Our family trip this summer involves one of the best destinations in the USA. Yellowstone National Park! We will be heading there for camping, hiking and exploring. The kids have never been to Yellowstone, so they are in for a fun experience. I am excited for them to see the Old Faithful geyser go off. Do you have any travel plans for this summer?
Other than the Yellowstone trip, our summer should be pretty relaxed at home. We like to have friends and family over for barbeques. I usually keep the menu simple with things like hot dogs and hamburgers. But just because I’m serving hot dogs does not mean it has to be “just a hot dog”. I’m talking about serving gourmet hot dogs with a grown-up taste!
One of my favorite gourmet hot dog recipes is a take on the Reuben sandwich. The Reuben Dog is a beef hot dog on a toasted bun topped with sauerkraut and a homemade Russian dressing. I use Hebrew National brand kosher all-beef franks for this recipe because everyone in my family agrees that they love the taste of their hot dog when it’s a Hebrew National. We’ll be enjoying all #99DaysofSummer with the brand!
I hope you will give this recipe a try the next time you grill. You will love it.
Reuben Dogs Recipe
Ingredients:
- 16 oz. sauerkraut, drained
- 8 Hebrew National kosher beef hot dogs
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 tablespoon sweet smoked paprika
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 8 deli rolls or good quality hot dog buns
- 1/2 cup dill relish
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a small saucepan, heat the sauerkraut over low heat until warmed throughout.
Put the hot dogs on a preheated grill. Right before they are done, split the hot dogs lengthwise and cover each one with a piece of Swiss cheese. Cover the grill and allow the cheese to melt.
While the hot dogs are grilling, prepare the Russian dressing. Combine the sour cream, ketchup and paprika. Set aside.
Once the hot dogs are done and the cheese is melted, remove them from the grill. If desired, warm or toast your hot dog bun/roll.
Place each hot dog in the middle of a split roll or hot dog bun. Top with the dressing and sauerkraut.

Hebrew National really makes the best hot dogs around. I haven’t had sauerkraut in years. I know my 3 year old wouldn’t eat it but my husband and I love it.

Kids’ recipe? This sounds perfect for my Honey/Hubby who loves both Reubens and Hebrew National dogs (frankly so do I…)
I’m always looking for new recipes and/or food ideas to liven up our meals – and frankly after mucho years of marriage – that’s not always easy. It’s even harder when you’re looking for quick and easy and (especially in Summer) that does NOT involve heating up the hours or more than a brief stint in the kitchen.
And finally money is always an object! So… all-in-all – I’d say this sounds like a potentially perfect recipe for us. Thank you – very much and I will let you know how it goes with the Hubby (Just looking at the ingredients, I can’t believe I won’t like it!)

My husband loves Reubens. This would be perfect for him. I can make his hot dog more deluxe and keep it basic for the kids. Thanks for the recipe.

It’s fun to make “kid” foods more upscale. This is a great idea.
You’re so lucky to be going to Yellowstone National Park!
We hope to get there someday too. I hope you have a blast!!!
