My kids love to hand out candy on Halloween. They also love to go trick or treating for themselves. We do a little bit of both, which means there’s nobody home to give out candy while we are out. The kids insist we leave a bowl of Halloween candy outside on the porch so we don’t miss any trick or treaters.
I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea or not. All it takes is one greedy kid who decides to dump the entire bowl into their trick or treat bag and we’re out of candy. But we have never actually had any problems. I think most kids take one or two, and go on their way. I know that is what my kids do when we visit houses that leave bowls of treats outside on the porch.
This year, I made up a little Halloween poem to go outside on the porch next to our candy bowl. It’s a short little saying to tell the kids to take a Halloween treat when they stop by our house on trick or treat night and we aren’t home. I printed it out to 8×10 size and put it in a frame. The sign reads:
Although we’re not home
To give you a SCARE,
Here’s a bowl of Tricks and Treats
Take one…if you DARE!
If you aren’t going to be at home on Halloween, but you still want to leave treats outside for your trick or treaters, I’m giving everyone access to the free printable download of my poem and sign. There are two different versions to pick from. Click on the image or link to download. Halloween Poem (black background) or Halloween Poem (purple background)
Have a Happy Halloween!
