Laundry Tips and Tricks: How To Do Laundry Faster

March 17, 2015 by Nicole

Thank you to Persil ProClean for sponsoring this Laundry Tips discussion. All opinions about products and how to do laundry faster are my own. #PersilProClean @PersilProClean

My household of four kids and a husband keeps me busy on Laundry Day. I do at least one load of laundry per day during the week. If I don’t, the dirty load of laundry doubles in size overnight.

I am constantly tweaking my laundry routine to try to save as much time as possible. Washing, drying, folding and putting away the laundry can take hours. Hours I would rather spend doing just about anything besides doing the laundry! Luckily, there are things we can all do to speed up the process. I even found out a way to cut washing time in half. Yes, I will tell you how to do it, too. It is so easy, you won’t believe you haven’t tried it sooner.

I hope you will share your laundry tips and tricks with me, too. Let me know what you think about mine:

laundry tips

Save time on sorting. Use a dark colored clothes basket for “dark” laundry and a lighter colored clothes basket for “white” laundry. Some people use a separate laundry basket for towels BUT I find it easiest to go around and collect dirty towels and immediately toss them in the washing machine. That way, a basket full of damp/wet towels won’t sit in a corner mildewing while it waits a day or more to get washed. It takes extra time and work to get stinky mildew smell out of towels, so I avoid it.

how to save time on laundry

Cut your wash time in half! Yes, in HALF! My washing machine has a “Normal” wash cycle that takes 54 minutes. That’s nearly one hour for just one load. But guess what I have learned? My washing machine’s “Quick” wash setting takes only 29 minutes and gets my clothes just as clean in a lot less time. Your washing machine settings may be a little different – but you get the idea. Try it for yourself and enjoy all the extra hours you can spend NOT washing clothes every week.

persil proclean capsules

Use premeasured detergent capsules like Persil ProClean Power-Caps. It takes less than 2 seconds to toss a capsule into the washing machine and eliminates the need to measure out laundry detergent. It is also less messy, which saves me time on cleaning up spills.

laundry room tips

Hang a dowel rod or clothesline kit in your laundry area. You will be able to pull clothes out of the dryer and immediately hang them on a hanger so they don’t wrinkle. This is my favorite way to avoid spending hours ironing clothes. You can also use the rod to hang clean, wet clothes from the washer up to air dry.

Time-saving towel trick: Add a dry, fluffy towel to the wet laundry as you put it in the dryer. The load will dry faster.

Fold faster! Prepare to have your mind blown when you watch this video on How to Fold a Shirt in Under 2 Seconds. Seriously. Amazing.

Those are some of my favorite ways to save time on Laundry Day (and every day is a Laundry Day in my household of six). How do YOU save time in the laundry room? Share your favorite laundry tips and tricks in the comments below.

Persil Laundry Detergent

I am always looking for new things to try out in my laundry room. One of the newest laundry detergents on the market is Persil ProClean. This detergent is available in store at Walmart in three different forms:

Power-Liquid – Contains a powerful combination of stain-fighters that help break down stains for an exceptional clean.
Power-Pearls – An innovative new kind of detergent that is loaded with Pro-White technology for dazzling whites. Also for colors.
Power-Caps – Pre-measured Power-Caps detergent capsule combines Pro-Lift Stain Removers plus a Brightness Formula for a premium clean.

The Power-Caps are my favorite for saving time. But I enjoy using the Power-Liquid and Power-Pearls as well. My laundry and laundry room smell fresh and clean with Persil ProClean detergent. The Power-Pearls are like no other laundry detergent I have seen. These tiny beads (pearls) are especially effective at keeping your white laundry bright. I like that you can also use the Power-Pearls on colored laundry because, well, sometimes I just don’t take the time to separate my darks and whites. They go into the wash together and I need to use a detergent that cleans them both.

My husband did a ton of laundry while I was gone last week and I can tell he likes to use the Power-Liquid. The bottle was full when I left, and at least a couple inches lower when I came home. I was impressed that he actually washed the clothes. Persil ProClean Power-Liquid and the Power-Pears are easy to measure with the cup/cap. Normal loads don’t require very much detergent at all. I have a HE washer and this brand works great as directed.

I have to say I am proud that I already follow most of your great tips. I did not know about the Time-saving towel trick: Add a dry, fluffy towel to the wet laundry as you put it in the dryer. I have to try that one!

Hi Maryann! That is great you already know and are using the tips. I now keep a dry towel near the dryer so I don’t forget to put one in. Wool dryer balls are another great option to get clothes dryer faster. I tried doing the aluminum foil balls but those did not work as good as a towel or as the wool dryer balls. Thanks for stopping by today! –Nicole

Yes, I am using the wool dryer balls too! I will keep the towel near my dryer, that is a great idea. Thanks. Anything to try to save on time and electric is worth a shot.

I really like the wool dryer walls which I recently got. Eliminates the need for the towel in the dryer and takes up a lot less room in there.

That’s a great tip, Jan! I used to use wool dryer balls too and they do work great. I especially loved to use them to help sheets and comforters dry faster. Unfortunately, between my kids and my dogs who enjoyed using the dryer balls as toys, I have lost them all. I would love to get some again one day – they do work wonderfully in the dryer and like you mentioned, are less bulky than a towel. Thank you for stopping by! Nicole

I like using the capsules instead of measuring out the clothes soap-it saves so much time! Also wash your clothes less often is my tip. I do not wash my jeans after only wearing one time-I wear multiple times before washing. Also hanging up my clothes right after drying is such a good idea because I do not like ironing. Another tip is when it is warm outside-hang your clothes to dry. This saves a lot of money on electricity!

Hi Julie – thank you for sharing all of your tips. We do that with jeans at my house too. Unless they get a stain, we wear them multiple times before washing. I would love to save $$ by using our dryer less. –Nicole

Great laundry tips! I dread having to do laundry all the time but these tips make my life easier!

These are great tips. I also use my washer’s quick settings quite frequently. I actually have my 12-year-old and 9-year-old sons helping out with laundry too..because it helps keep them aware of what actually goes into the laundry process plus I’m kind of thinking that I am helping my future daughter-in-laws out too:) Anyways, I always buy the pre-measured detergent caps for the boys, because that helps prevent detergent waste.

Yes, your future daughters in law will love you for teaching the boys to wash clothes. Like you said, the premeasured capsules are perfect for when kids start doing laundry. My oldest is 11 and he CAN wash clothes (with the capsule) it is just getting him to actually DO it that needs work. LOL Thank you for stopping by!
