It seems like everyone has a cupcake stand but me! And I am always needing one for birthday parties and get togethers. So when I saw a DIY Cupcake Stand dollar store craft idea on Pinterest, I pinned it to my Crafts board. I figured it was worth the $4 gamble to find out if I could really make one or not. Spoiler Alert! You can totally make one of these and it’s so easy…as in “why didn’t I think of this before” type of easy.
All you need to make a tiered cupcake stand are:
- 2 candlestick holders
- 1 large (dinner) plate
- 1 smaller (dessert) plate
- hot glue gun
There was not a huge color selection of dishes at my dollar store, but I was able to find a yellow dinner plate that I hoped would work with the Banana Cream Pie Cupcakes I planned to make. I could not find a matching yellow dessert plate, so I decided to make do with a clear-colored one.
Okay, so you can probably guess how to make these by now. First, you’ll take your hot glue gun and line the top of the candlestick holder with glue, then place it in the middle of the underside of the dinner plate. Allow glue to set and make sure the holder is firmly held in place.
Do the same thing with the other candlestick holder and the dessert plate. Now you have made 2 one-tier serving stands. If you want to make combine these to make a two-tiered stand, all you have to do is hot glue the bottom of the dessert plate’s candlestick holder directly in the middle of the top of the dinner plate.
I decided not to glue my two stands together so I can use them as separate stands OR I can set the smaller one on top to create the two-tiered cupcake stand.
What do you think? This is such a simple and inexpensive way to make a cupcake stand, right? Any ideas on how to make a cupcake stand even better? What are some of your favorite finds at the dollar store? Feel free to leave your comments below.

That is easy and cute. You could use all kinds of things in between like A B C Blocks glued together or glue christmas decor together in between, wow the ideas are endless!

Great idea! I’m going to keep my eyes peeled for pretty plates and candle holders during my next trips to the local thrift stores. Thanks!

This is ingenious and lovely! I have seen cupcake stands in the store before with so much less character that cost a fortune! I will most definitely be using this idea. We ten to make cupcakes more often now than tiered cakes. I could use this idea for sandwiches, fruit, cookies, etc.! I just love it!

I think it is the most frugal way to make a cupcake stand. And I like that you kept them separate, they’ll get more use that way and be easier to store.
If you wanted to make it look more storebought or matching, You could go to the thrift store instead when shopping for dishes. They have tons of glass, crystal, vases, candleholders and the like. Another way would be to spray paint the candleholders to make the color of the dishes, if you wanted a solid color stand.
I’ll definitely keep this idea in mind.

You are so crafty and frugal.
Family Dollar usually has good deals on hair care & baby products, but I am going to check out the “kitchen” section next time.

This is a cute idea and you could even make a three tiered stand using the same items. If you can’t find matching make each a different color on purpose.
