Is Your House Drier Than the Sahara? Why You Need a Humidifier.

Mom Always Finds Out received a Honeywell product for humidifier review. All opinions expressed in the blog post are my own. The blog post may contain affiliate links.

why you should run a humidifier

Winter’s cold, dry air can lead to all sorts of problems. The ones I notice the most this time of year are chapped lips and itchy skin. Humidity (the amount of water vapor in the air) can drop to as low as 10% this time of year — that’s drier than the Sahara Desert! That’s why I add moisture to our home’s air with a humidifier. Running a humidifier can help prevent chapped lips and is even recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology.

We have had a humidifier running 24 hours a day since the cold of December set in. Our gas heat really dries out the air and my kids complain about scaly, itchy skin. A couple of them even get nose bleeds if our air is too dry. My oldest son suffers from cold sores…as I write this, I realize it sounds like we are falling apart! But it’s true. Cold, dry air can cause all sorts of skin problems for us. As a mom, I do what I can to fight its effects and that includes humidifiers.

Adding moisture to the air in your home can be helpful in so many ways. The many benefits of using a humidifier include:

  • It’s good for your sinus health
  • Prevents nosebleeds
  • Soothes dry skin
  • Prevents chapped lips
  • Helps protect furniture from cracking
  • Lowers static electricity in the air (bye-bye frizzy hair!)
  • Helps keep your indoor houseplants healthy
  • Helps babies sleep better

honeywell humidifierI recently added a second humidifier to our home. The more the better! The Honeywell Designer Series Filter Free Cool Mist Humidifier (HUT-300, $69.99) has a sleek, modern design that blends right in with our house’s decor. It’s perfect for a larger room like our living room area because it keeps an area of up to 460 square feet comfortable.

The .8 gallon tank can run up to 48 hours per filling! I usually need to fill ours every morning because I run it full blast, and the tank lasts around 24 hours. There is a knob that allows you to adjust the output. I like that you can actually see the mist coming out of the top and going into the air.  This humidifier runs quietly with a low hum that is hardly noticeable.

The HUT-300 model is easy to care for because you don’t need to replace the filter. Every week or so, I follow the manual’s instructions for cleaning the filter at home with a vinegar solution. The tank is antimicrobially treated. This humidifier also has a soft blue nightlight, which is a nice feature. The light also lets you see the water tank level, so you know if it’s almost time for a refill or not.

Honeywell offers a wide selection of cool and warm mist humidifiers. Find out which one is right for your home when you visit HoneywellComfort.com.

Do you suffer from dry, cracked skin and/or chapped lips? Do you run a humidifier in your home? Do you need one?

Where to Buy:

Honeywell Humidifers are sold at retailers nationwide and online at HoneywellComfort.com and at Amazon.com.

Thanks for letting me know all the ins and outs and I think.. now I know why we need one, too. We all had sinus problems for weeks now, so maybe this will be the answer to our prayers…

Hi Melanie! A humidifier can really help with sinus issues. Adding moisture to the dry air inside the house can be soothing to nasal passages and throats. Even if you just sleep with a humidifier going in your bedroom at night, I think you’ll be able to tell a difference. I hope you all get to feeling better. -Nicole
