Display your Halloween candy in a fun way! It’s so easy to turn an ordinary Mason jar into an apothecary jar. These make cute Halloween decorations for party table centerpieces or to simply sit on the shelf. Change up your paint and glitter colors to match your decor for any holiday occasion.
If you know me and my crafting style, you know I like fast, easy, and thrifty ideas. One Mason Jar/Apothecary Jar can be made for under $3 using candlesticks from the dollar store. If you have these materials at home already, it’s even cheaper! You can make these Mason jar crafts as ornate as you wish, but I will show you the simplest way.
Materials Needed (per jar)
- Mason Jar with Lid and Ring (I used wide mouth half pint size and regular mouth pint size jars)
- Drawer Pull (knob) *with a flat base
- Candlestick
- Spray Paint (I used black)
- Glitter (I used orange)
- E6000 craft glue
I have pictures of the steps (see below) for reference.
How To Turn a Mason Jar into an Apothecary Jar
- Spray paint candlesticks, drawer pull (knob), Mason jar lids and rings. Quickly (before the paint dries) toss glitter onto them. Allow to dry completely.
- Use E6000 glue to attach the drawer pull (knob) to the center of the Mason jar lid. Allow to dry completely.
- Use E6000 glue to attach the Mason jar on top of the candlestick (center base of the jar on the candlestick for balance). Allow to dry completely.
- Fill jars with candy. Put jar lids and rings on and they are ready for display!

What kind of spray paint did you use, that it works on glass?
Nicole says
Hi Tami,
I used Krylon Colormaster. It works on glass, ceramic, wood, iron, fabric, etc. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much Nicole that helps a lot. I was thinking that it would be hard to find paint that would work. How long does it take to dry? may I ask. How much is the cost of paint?. I want to make these for a church event, and have a budget to stick with. Need to make nine of them. Also on the mason jars, the lids I come in two parts. did you glue the round disc to the Ring? or did you leave them separate.
Nicole says
The spray paint is about $4-5 at Walmart. They only take about an hour to dry (probably less). You would only need one can of spray paint. I left the ring and the lid as two separate parts – you could probably glue them all together and have it be fine. It was just easier for me to leave them separate.

These would make a lovely display, and the candy could be easily changed out for something Thanksgiving-y.

I love these! I’ve been wanting to find a new to display candy and I’ve always loved the old apothecary looking jars. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.

These look great! I don’t know that I’ve ever noticed that size mason jar, though! I guess I don’t pay that much attention;)

What a cute idea, I actually don’t own any Halloween decor, this would be nice as I know it wouldn’t cost much.

What a fun way to display party goodies. They would not hold up as regular candy displays at our house though, because the kids would snatch it up in no time.

I would never have know that your candlesticks, etc. were spray painted black. The glitter helped them to have a bronze patina. This is a wonderful craft & I would feel proud to display them as a candy jar.

How cute are these?! My mom always had holiday candy out and it made the house so festive. These look pretty easy, so maybe I will attempt this craft with my girls!
