Why I Love My Lunette Menstrual Cup (Review)

May 23, 2012 by Nicole

Anytime a new smart phone or tablet is introduced, the whole world stops to take notice of the latest innovations in technology. I feel like women should give that same type of attention to the latest innovation in feminine products – the menstrual cup. Specifically, the Lunette Menstrual Cup.  Women spend a significant portion of their lives dealing with the demands of a monthly period.   So when a product comes along that completely changes the way we deal with our periods, we need to take note.

Mom Always Finds Out received a Lunette Menstrual Cup for honest review. All opinions expressed are my own and based on my personal experience with the product. This blog post may contain affiliate links.

What is a Lunette Menstrual Cup?  A small cup made from medical grade silicone that is a safe, hygienic, easy to use alternative to tampons and pads. The cup can is easily cleaned and reusable, which means ZERO WASTE. You can wear the cup for up to 12 hours, which means less time and hassle spent changing.

I want to let you know why I love my Lunette menstrual cup in hopes that you will open your mind to this new option in feminine protection.  Yes, it’s different that the conventional products BUT I firmly believe that in this case, DIFFERENT IS BETTER.

My Lunette Menstrual Cup is the Selene (light blue) model. Each cup comes with a lovely satin carrying case (like mine pictured below):

Lunette menstrual cups are the only FDA-approved colored menstrual cups on the market today. The coloring is completely safe, and perfect for women like me, who like pretty options! The Lunette also comes in a clear color option as well as a beautiful green, purple and coral.

Lunette’s design is superior. I have tried other menstrual cups, and found that my Lunette cup has features that “fix” the problems I was having with my other menstrual cups:

  • Smooth Rim – Makes the cup easier to insert
  • A flat and flexible stem – Makes the cup easy to find and remove
  • Dimensions – The Lunette is shorter than other cups, which makes it more comfortable to wear
  • The Size 2 has a firm consistency – The firm consistency helps the cup pop open upon insertion
  • Easy To Clean – larger air holes and smooth interiors clean easily

Practice makes perfect. Honestly, I did not have any issues getting my Lunette cup properly inserted from the very first time I used it. I think it is because the Lunette has a soft, flexible design that makes it easy to insert, and also because of my background experience using other menstrual cups.  It’s important to be familiar with your body and how your female anatomy works so that you can have a positive experience using your Lunette cup.  You will not feel anything when the cup is properly inserted.

No leaks! Every woman’s flow is different, so it takes time to figure out how often your Lunette cup needs to be emptied.  Heavy flow days may mean your cup needs to be emptied every 2-3 hours. Light flow days may mean you can wait as long as 12 hours.  Personally, I wear reusable cloth pantyliners if I am worried about leakage.  The Lunette (properly inserted) will not leak.

Economical. I don’t spend money on expensive tampons anymore. Enough said!

Ecofriendly. A reusable menstrual cup is a wonderful green choice! There is no waste from applicators, wrappers, packaging, pads, bio-waste, etc. My Lunette menstrual cup will last me for years before needing to be replaced.

Lunette Menstrual Cups come in 2 Models with different absorbencies.  Model 1 is the recommended option for women with light to moderate flow, younger women or women who have never had intercourse.  Model 2 is recommended for women who have a normal or heavier flow. Menstrual cups work differently from tampons and can hold a greater volume..

Convenient. Life is busy and I love that when I use a Lunette menstrual cup, I don’t have to slow down just because I am on my period. My family is active and on-the-go quite a bit.  I can easily bring my Lunette with me anywhere we go because it is small and hardly takes up any space at all. I don’t have to worry about frequent changes, which is especially nice when we are out in the middle of a lake boating or enjoying a game at the ballpark.

I could go on and on about how much easier dealing with my period is now that I use a Lunette menstrual cup. I have found a product I love to use and want to share the news with all women.  It truly is a life-changing experience.

I used a diva cup, but I’ve heard some great things about the Lunette as well. Both are far, far better than tampons, that’s for sure!

I try different tampon alternatives, and menstrual cups are by far the winner. It can be hard to invest in different kinds of menstrual cups, but it is so worth it once you find one that fits your body. Lunette continues to be the one for me. 🙂

I use a menstrual cup (different brand) and I will never go back to tampons or pads!

I just want to let you know that I LOVE MY LUNETTE CUP! I have never tried a menstrual cup before, but I ordered Model 1 from Amazon, plus their wash, and wipes. This was my first period with it and I had no difficulty inserting or removing it. It does take some time to get used to removing it, but really it’s not a big deal. You’ll get in the groove with it, you just have to give it time and practice. I was a tampon user and the idea of the stem going inside was probably the biggest hurdle for me. It can’t get lost, so don’t worry about that. If you begin to panic, please try and relax, it will come out! Walk away from it and come back to it later. But, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I can’t wait to tell EVERYONE! 🙂

I have wanted to try one of these for a while now. I love that there is no waste going into a landfill from it. Yes, you do need to use water when cleaning this product, but I think the little water you use is better than filling a landfill with pads and tampons!

I would like to try a cup for several reasons. First, to save money. Second, I will always be prepared. Third, it might help with problems I have. And fourth, it is better for the environment.

I have another brand of cup and while I use it every month, it’s not comfortable all the time (i.e. I can feel it). I’d love to try a different brand and see if it’s just my body or the cup!

I’m a cosmetology student and I’m always on my feet, so it’s difficult finding time to run to the restroom to change in-between clients. And I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve had a few accidents because I didn’t make it to the rest room in time to change.

I would love to try the Lunette because I have erratic periods. I have menorrhagia, and I have been researching menstrual cups for nearly a year, (August of last year) and I have determined that small lunette would be perfect for me.
I’m a student with an erratic schedule and a tight budget and it really would mean the world to me if i won the lunette cup.

  36. Amy S says

I’d love to win a Lunette menstrual cup because I’ve never tried a menstrual cup and they’re a little pricy for something I might not like. As for why I want to try a menstrual cup in the first place, after giving birth to two children, I’ve found that tampons just don’t fit me as well as they used to without leaking. I’m up for something new.

  37. Meredith says

I want to try a Lunette because, while I was pleased with the other brand I tried before having my son, post-pregnancy that brand no longer worked well for me.

I have owned a Lunette Menstrual cup for a while, and love spreading the word about them to all the women I know. I have a friend who cannot afford a menstrual cup (especially as high quality as the Lunette menstrual cup), so if I win I would LOVE to be able to send one to her for free! <3 Lunette!
