There is a growing trend in our society to get back to the basics and become more self-reliant. A lot of us may think it is a great idea, but need to find a starting point. The Modern-Day Pioneer: Simple Living in the 21st Century is a wonderful introduction to simple living in our times.
The book is easy to read, and geared towards beginners who want to learn how to incorporate basic skills for simple living into their everyday lives. You’ll find step-by-step instructions for projects ranging from building a raised garden bed to making your own soap and quilting. Anyone who is looking for inspiration on how to live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle should check out The Modern-Day Pioneer: Simple Living in the 21st Century.
One of my favorite chapters is about Pressure Canning. I have always been interested in learning to can fruits and vegetables, and there are basic instructions as well as tips for canning a variety of foods in The Modern-Day Pioneer book. This book has inspired me to learn more about how to get started with pressure canning, as well as try other “pioneer” skills.
Pioneer Skills you’ll find in this book include:
- Composting
- Collecting Rainwater
- Herbal Healing and First-Aid
- Basic Soapmaking
- Breadbaking
- Raising Chickens
- Introduction to Sewing and more!
We can all learn how to be pioneers and enjoy the benefits that come from knowing how to take care of ourselves and knowing we are living a more sustainable lifestyle.
What pioneer skill do you wish you had? Growing a garden? Harvesting local honey? Homebrewing? Or is it something else? Let me know in the comments.
