May 15, 2015 by Nicole 30 Comments

This all-time favorite Chex party mix has gone into Baby Mode! If you are planning a baby shower, you will want to include this Muddy Buddy recipe. By the way, you may call this kind of mix Chex Puppy Chow or Puppy Food. Puppy Chow, Muddy Buddies, Puppy Food, it’s all the same delicious thing! Everyone loves it. Who can resist the sweetness of a chocolate and peanut butter Chex mix?

Chex Muddy Buddies are a quick and easy party snack, and you can make them perfect for a boy or girl baby shower using blue or pink candies. I mixed up batches of both so you could see just how cute they can be. You won’t believe how easy it can be to pull together these colorful baby shower snacks – even at the last minute.

Are you on Muddy Buddies Team Pink or Team Blue?

Serving tip: Fill pink (or blue) cupcake wrappers with Chex Muddy Buddies. Use a tiered cupcake stand to create a decorative display on the refreshment table. Everyone will be impressed at the color-coordinated Chex mix!

Baby Shower Food Ideas Chex

Ingredients:

  • 9 cups Rice Chex or Corn Chex (or a combination of both)
  • 1 1/2 cups white vanilla baking chips (*sub chocolate or peanut butter chips if you want!)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons PINK or BLUE edible glitter (sprinkles)
  • 1/4 cup PINK or BLUE jimmies sprinkles
  • 1/2 cup PINK or BLUE and white candy-coated chocolate candies

*Note: I could not find all-Pink or all-Blue jimmies sprinkles, so I left them out. I also used only pink and blue (no white) Sixlets candy-coated chocolate candies. I used a mix of Rice and Corn Chex cereals.

Directions:

1. Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
2. In 1-quart microwaveable bowl, microwave white vanilla baking chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.
3. Add powdered sugar, edible glitter and sprinkles. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Stir in chocolate candies. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

Thanks, Lisa! Have fun planning the baby shower. I don’t know if you have had Chex “Puppy Chow”/ Muddy Buddies before, but it’s one Chex mix that just about everyone I know likes to eat. I like that it is so easy to make a LOT of it for a crowd. Try it with M&Ms chocolate candies, too. –Nicole

What can be substituted for the peanut butter?

Hi Mimi, I have never made it with anything but peanut butter, but there are peanut butter substitutes you could try. It will change the taste a bit, so you may want to experiment a little to see which one you like best. You could try: Sun Butter (Sunflower Butter), Soy Butter, or another type of Nut Butter like Almond Butter, Cashew Butter or Macadamia Butter. Good luck! -Nicole

Hi Karen, Snow Muddies is a cute thing to call it. I haven’t tried using almond bark, but that’s a good idea to use instead of the chocolate chips. Thanks so much for sharing that with us, I am sure it will be helpful to everyone! –Nicole

Hi Denise, Yes, you can make this mix a few days ahead of time. I would put it in an airtight storage container and keep it in the refrigerator (mainly to make sure it stays cooler so the chocolate candies don’t melt.) Thank you for your question.

Another idea if you are not a person that cooks or you are in a hurry….Buy the Muddy Buddy in a bag and then mix the other parts. That cutes out the whole process of making the Muddy Buddy. That’s a GREAT time saver,, Good Luck!!!!

Can you use white vanilla candy wafers, or does it require the chips, or does it matter?

      Hi Debbie,
I don’t think it matters if you use the white candy melts instead of white chocolate chips. There is a slight taste difference in candy melts vs. white chocolate, but I can’t imagine it would be that noticeable. I have made other Chex mix recipes and used candy melts, and they turned out really well in my opinion. I hope that helps! 🙂 –Nicole

If there is a peanut allergy (can’t use peanut butter) can I just omit or replace with same amount of butter, or….?

      Hi Elizabeth,
I have not ever made Chex Muddy Buddies with something other than peanut butter, but I know that other people have done it and it works. You can make nut allergy friendly muddy buddies using Sunbutter instead of peanut butter. You would use the same amount of Sunbutter as peanut butter replacement. Of course, Sunbutter does not taste the same as peanut butter because it is made from sunflower seeds and not peanuts, but other people who use Sunbutter instead of peanut butter in muddy buddy recipes say it tastes really good. Hope this info helps and you’re able to make some delicious muddy buddies! –Nicole

I was super excited to make this for my daughters baby boy shower. I decided to mix white and chocolate chips. It worked great except that the cereal was more of a brown color from the chocolate despite the powdered sugar. Still tastes great just a little darker- just FYI. I didn’t think about that beforehand!
