An Easter basket without PEEPS would be as strange as an Easter basket without colorful eggs at our house. The brightly colored marshmallow PEEPS were a part of my Easters growing up just as much as they are part of my own children’s Easters now. I can’t imagine walking down the Easter candy aisle in the grocery store and not grabbing at least a box or two…or three…or more PEEPS. These days, the ever expanding varieties of PEEPS makes it impossible to choose just one kind of PEEPS. Chocolate dipped PEEPS? And bite-sized chocolate covered PEEPSters? Now that is what I call Easter candy inspiration!
No matter what PEEPS innovations are to come in the future, nothing will take away the hilarious memories of what we used to do as kids with our PEEPS on Easter morning. There were four of us, and we each got our own box of PEEPS in our Easter baskets. I don’t know whose idea it was – but we thought it would be a pretty fun contest to see how many PEEPS we could fit into our mouths at one time. So we did! I remember trying to push and shove and squeeze as many PEEPS as I could into my mouth so I could be the winner. Of course, everyone else was doing the same thing, but the older and bigger kids would always win.
I guess the unfortunate part of our PEEPS contest was that there were lots of PEEPS casualties that were left uneaten in the aftermath. They may not have made it to our tummies, but they sure left an impression on our fun memories of Easter – so they were not a waste at all in my book.
Luckily, my kids have not yet tried any similar mischievous antics or contests with their PEEPS – so far. They look forward to seeing what color PEEPS they will get each year and I have noticed that they always eat the heads off of the PEEPS first — if it’s a chick — and the ears off the PEEPS first if it’s a bunny. This will be our first year of putting the chocolate bite-sized PEEPSters in their baskets, I’m sure that will add a lot of excitement to our Easter morning. PEEPS are definitely an expected part of an Easter basket at our house.
