Summer’s Twist on a Winter Favorite: Frozen Hot Chocolate

July 19, 2011 by Nicole 6 Comments

”Frozen

Chocolate milk and hot chocolate are at the top of my favorite beverages list.  So when I heard there was a drink called Frozen Hot Chocolate, I had to track down the recipe.  The most famous recipe is one shared by a New York restaurant known for its desserts called Serendipity 3.  It was secret for a long time, but now it is out there for the world to try.

Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients:

3 ounces best-quality chocolate

2 teaspoons store-bought hot chocolate mix

1 1/2 tablespoons sugar

1 1/2 cups milk

3 cups ice

Directions:  Chop the chocolate into small pieces and melt chocolate in a small heavy saucepan or in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Stir occasionally until melted. Add the hot chocolate mix and sugar, stirring constantly until blended.

Remove from heat, slowly add half a cup of the milk, and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature. In a blender, place the remaining cup of milk, the chocolate mixture, and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth.

Optional: Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

My suggestion to you if you plan to make this at home is to be sure you are using a food processor/blender that can really chop the ice chunks into very small pieces.  I LOVE our Ninja and it works perfectly for chopping the ice.

I liked this Frozen Hot Chocolate recipe – it even gave me a “brain freeze,” so drink it with caution!  I definitely will make it again, maybe tweaking it a little bit to use frozen chocolate milk cubes instead of ice cubes because I noticed that as the ice cubes melted, they watered down the chocolate taste a bit.

Overall, yum!

It’s a good recipe – I wish I could try the real thing though – it is supposed to be REALLY good!! I think they homemake their whipped topping so it’s ultra fattening and delicious!
