Cheesy Tortellini and Turkey Sausage Recipe

November 8, 2016 by Nicole

Fall has been so busy at my house with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Between work, school and my kids sports and other extracurricular activities, I don’t have much time on the week nights to prepare dinner. Dinner recipes that include the words “fast” and “easy” are sure to get my attention. I’m sure busy moms everywhere can relate.

Easy dinner recipes can be lifesavers IF they are a wholesome meal my family will actually eat. I feel like I really scored big time with this fast and easy Cheesy Tortellini and Turkey Sausage recipe. This one pot meal is one of the must try recipes with  Mild Italian turkey sausage. It’s so simple to make — dinner is ready to eat in 20 minutes! — and tastes really good as leftovers, too.

Cheesy Tortellini and Turkey Sausage Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Mild Italian Turkey Sausage, crumbled
  • 24 ounce jar of your favorite spaghetti sauce
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream
  • 20 ounce package of refrigerated Three Cheese Tortellini, uncooked

Directions:

1. In a large skillet on medium-high heat, brown the turkey sausage for 7-8 minutes until done.

2. Turn the skillet temperature down to medium-low. Stir in spaghetti sauce and heavy cream.

3. Stir in uncooked tortellini. Cover and cook for 8 minutes or until pasta is tender.

TIP: Use lean, tasty turkey in recipes usually prepared with beef or pork. Examples: Burgers, Sausages, and Pasta Dishes

My mom was visiting from out of town the night my family ate Cheesy Tortellini and Turkey Sausage for dinner. Everyone really liked it, and my mom even and asked me to give her the recipe so she could make it at home. When I told her that I had used TURKEY sausage instead of beef or pork, she didn’t believe me. She had never eaten turkey sausage before and couldn’t tell the difference. This meal turned her into a fan of turkey sausage!

Over the weekend, I smoked a bone-in turkey breast. I am pretty proud of myself – this was my first time using our smoker all by myself. It was so much easier than my husband makes it out to be. I always thought it was complicated. It’s not. Turn the smoker on, put meat in, take it out when the thermometer says it’s done. Easy-peasy.

I stuffed the turkey with sliced oranges and lemons (turkey loves balancing flavors like citrus) and slow smoked it for about 3 hours until it was done. *Remember to always cook turkey to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

We sliced the smoked turkey off the bone and have made several meals with it. Leftover turkey can be used to make fast and easy meals like turkey and rice, turkey on green salad, and turkey sandwiches. Pulled turkey sliders are also a favorite around here.

After the meat was removed from the turkey bone, I boiled it in water to make a turkey soup base. I have plans to make turkey noodle soup this week.
