Simple Ways To Turn Your Halloween Into HalloGREEN

October 24, 2011 by Nicole

It doesn’t take any supernatural forces to add a little eco-friendliness to this spooky holiday.  Here are a few simple ways to help you turn your Halloween into HalloGREEN.

  1. Halloween Costumes.  Who says costumes have to be new?  Have a costume swap with friends, buy a secondhand costume at a thrift store or through online children’s clothing swap sites like Thredup.  If you’re feeling creative, try your hand at making a costume from fabrics and materials you have at home.
  2. Halloween Decorations.  Invest in reusable decorations that will last year after year.  Or skip the scary altogether and decorate with items that will fit the mood all fall long: pumpkins, apples, and autumn-colored candles.
  3. Halloween Candy.  Kids (and their parents) will welcome eco-friendly and healthy alternatives like organic Clif Kids Z-Bars, Clif Kids Organic Twisted Fruit Rope, organic granola bars and fruit leather strips or organic fruit/cereal bars.  Non-food treats such as stickers, crayons and homemade play dough can be fun, too.
  4. Halloween Face Paint and Makeup.  Choose safe, natural ingredients instead of traditional face paints.  Read my blog post about face paint safety HERE.  Want to know exactly what goes into your makeup?  HERE is a Do-It-Yourself face paint recipe for you to try.
  5. Halloween Trick-or-Treat bags.  Kids can carry their candy haul in reusable bags instead of plastic.  Young Halloween crafters can turn ordinary pillowcases into scary sacks with paints and markers.  Raid your closets and dig out your old handbags and purses for the kids to use.
  6. Halloween Pumpkins.  Don’t toss the pumpkin guts!  Use this simple recipe to roast your pumpkins seeds for a healthy and delicious snack.  When it’s time for your Jack O Lantern’s candle to go out for good, let him hang out in your compost pile instead of the garbage can.
  7. Halloween Door-To-Door.  Save gas and get some exercise while trick-or-treating with your kids.  Ditch the car and walk door-to-door.

These are just a few simple ways to turn your Halloween into a HalloGREEN.  Do you have any HalloGREEN ideas to share?  Please leave them in the comments.
