Dinosaur Crafts: DIY Dino Fossil Kit and Party Favors For Kids

February 20, 2015 by Nicole 8 Comments

My five-year-old’s dinosaur obsession is still going strong. He has loved everything dino from the time he was two. Dinosaur books, toys, blankets, clothes, and of course he must have a dinosaur birthday party every year. His most recent dinosaur birthday party was lots of fun, and fairly simple for me to pull together. One of the fun things we did was let the kids make dinosaur fossils using homemade chocolate play dough and dinosaur skeleton figures I found online at Amazon.

The dinosaur figures really exceeded my expectations. They are sturdy toys and the perfect size for kids to handle. Each dino measures about 5 to 6 inches, depending on which type of dino it is. I was torn between having a dinosaur dig in the sandbox and making fossils with play dough. Either one is a good dinosaur party idea, but I decided that the play dough would be less messy.

chocolate play dough recipe

We made homemade chocolate play dough using this recipe. Chocolate play dough smells good and the brown is a good color to use for making “fossils.” We made enough dough for every child to have a piece large enough to roll out and press their dinosaur skeleton in to make the imprint The kids also figured out how to make dinosaur footprint fossils using the bottom of the dino’s feet. All of the boys and the girls enjoyed this activity.

Each child got to take home a DIY Fossil Kit that included containers of play dough and a dinosaur skeleton figure. I found all of the small inexpensive containers with lids at the dollar store.

dinosaur activity for kids

This dinosaur craft is a great sensory activity for young children. If your child is into dinosaurs, I definitely recommend doing this at home. My kids have spent hours of creative play with the dinosaur figures and dough.

Does your child like dinosaurs? Are you looking for dinosaur activities for school or a party? Let me know what you think about our DIY dinosaur fossil kits.

My daughter loves dinosaurs. I will have to see if she wants to do this at her birthday party! Thanks for the ideas.

I was glad that I could find an easy party activity that everyone liked to do. I’ll have to write up a couple of the other fun things we did to go along with the dino theme. Thank goodness for dinosaurs! 🙂

I really like your dinosaur fossil kits! They are so cute and a really fun craft to make and have fun with. I know my nephew would love to play with this kit! I have two dinosaur figures and I need to make the homemade play dough for him and give it to him! He would enjoy this kit.

Thanks, Nicole! Yes, all the kids at our party loved it (boys and girls – so I was glad I could give them all the same things – it can be hard to find things to appeal to both).
