3 Reasons To Make the Switch From Plastic To Glass Straws

January 29, 2014 by Nicole

Mom Always Finds Out received Glass Dharma glass straws for review purposes. All opinions expressed are my own, based on personal experiences with the products.

glass straws

Drinking from a plastic straw and tossing it in the garbage is something most of us do on a regular basis. It’s probably something we don’t even think about. We get straws at restaurants all the time. But one-use plastic anything is wasteful, even when it’s something as small as a straw.

According to Eco Cycle, more than 500 million plastic straws are used in the United States every day. That’s enough to fill more than 127 school buses. Every single day! Now imagine that amount of plastic waste going into the landfills each day. It makes you think twice about using plastic straws, doesn’t it?

A glass straw makes an eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws. You can reuse a glass straw again and again. I’m talking years and years. And if you buy a Glass Dharma straw, they come with a Lifetime Guarantee!

Glass Dharma straws are made from borosilicate glass. This type of glass is commonly used for high quality glassware (think: Pyrex®). It’s simply the strongest commercially available glass on the market. Plus, it is very easy to care for because it is dishwasher and microwave safe.

Why make the switch from plastic to glass straws? I can think of several reasons everyone should make the switch.

  1. Plastic straws are a waste. Imagine how many plastic straws go into landfills each year just from fast food establishments. All that plastic adds up fast! A reusable glass straw is the eco-friendly choice.
  2. Glass straws are a healthy, BPA-free choice. Plastic straws may contain harmful BPA that gets into our bodies.
  3. Glass straws can be decorative, pretty and make your drinks fun. Once you drink from a Glass Dharma straw, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about!

If you are thinking about making the switch, check out the glass straws at Glass Dharma. Glass Dharma products are handmade right here in the US of A! They offer many different sizes and styles of glass straw. More than I could have imagined when I first started looking into glass straws.

Glass straws come in different lengths and different diameters. For example, you’d want a wider-diameter Smoothie straw to use when you drink thicker drinks like milkshakes and smoothies. If you are sipping coffee, tea or wine, a smaller straw would work best. Don’t worry, the Glass Dharma website makes it easy to find the straw sizes you need. And a safe bet is always the Iced Tea straw. This all-around good size of straw works well with most beverages.

My personal favorite straws are the colorful Decorative Dots. Each straw has colored dots, which makes them look cute AND it has a few secret functions. The dots help keep the straw from rolling off the counter and make it easier for me to find them when I lay them down. You can also use different colored straws to color code your drinks – it’s really helpful to know whose is whose.

Glass Dharma has an amazing Lifetime Guarantee on their glass straws. And yes, I know they 100% stand by that guarantee from personal experience.

Last week, my elbow knocked my mug (and glass straw) right off the table. Everything went flying and unfortunately my glass straw hit the tile floor and broke. Even though it was completely my fault the straw broke, the Glass Dharma Lifetime Guarantee means I get a free replacement. Which I did. It was easy and I had my replacement straw less than 3 days after I broke the first one. Their shipping department is lightning fast!

Glass Dharma straws are easy to clean. They can be washed in the dishwasher or of course, by hand. Not all Glass Dharma straws come with a cleaning brush, so you may want to order one separately. The small cleaning brushes make it really easy to get any gunk out from inside the straw.

Do you use straws? Have you ever tried a glass straw? Which Glass Dharma straw would you like to try?

I’m pretty clumsy, and so are my children unfortunately, so even though there is a lifetime warranty I am afraid of breaking the straws. I think I will buy som “trial” straws to see how we fare.

I always like glass straws and these look good. They’re great to use at a birthday party for kids and then let the kids take the straws home as a small party favor.

Borosilicate glass is a type of glass with the main ingredients of silica and boron oxide. Borosilicate glass is most well known for having very low thermal expansion, making it resistant to thermal shock, more so than any other common glass. It is also non-porous and Hypo-allergenic. Borosilicate glass was first developed by German glassmaker Otto Schott in the late 19th century. Borosilicate glass is often used for high-quality beverage glassware and kitchenware (a popular brand name is Pyrex®). Borosilicate glassware has increased durability and has microwave and dishwasher compatibility. It contains no lead.
