Most kids get between 8 and 12 colds per year. The common cold usually lasts 7-10 days, which can seem like forever to a child who isn’t feeling well. There are several ways parents can try to ease their child’s cold and cough symptoms. Parents who want all-natural relief for their little ones can try Little Remedies line of cold, cough and fever relief products. Little Remedies are made for babies and children, and contain no artificial flavors, artificial colors or alcohol.
The following natural cold and cough remedies for kids won’t make their illness go away faster, but it can help them feel more comfortable.
1. Keep your child hydrated. My kids like to drink water, juice and milk – all good choices.
2. Ease coughs with Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup (ages 4 and up). This simple, all-natural syrup coats and soothes the throat, and can help calm coughs.
3. Sore throats need soft foods. A sore throat may make it hard for kids to eat their regular foods. If a sore throat makes it difficult for your child to eat, try soft foods like puddings, frozen pops, chicken noodle soup, jello, and ice cream.
4. Treat stuffy noses with Little Remedies for Noses Saline Spray/Drops. This non-medicated formula is safe for infants, children and adults to use. The best part is that you can use Little Remedies for Noses Nasal Spray as often as needed to break up nasal congestion.
5. Run a cool mist humidifier or vaporizer in your child’s room. This adds moisture to the air, which can help your child breathe easier through dry, congested nasal passages.
6. Blow their nose. Young children will need help learning how to blow their nose. Nose blowing helps get rid of mucus so your child can breathe better. Be sure to use soft tissues and use a moisturizer around their nostrils to avoid irritation and soreness.
7. Keep your child’s head elevated at night. Prop them up with an extra pillow so mucus can drain and they can breath easier.
These natural cold remedies for kids can be great at-home care. But parents should also know when to call the pediatrician. A few examples of times to call the doctor include when your child has any one of these symptoms: a fever of 102 or higher in babies and children 3 months and up, a barking cough, a wheezing cough, or a cough that does not go away within 2 weeks.
One of my favorite Little Remedies products is the Little Remedies for Noses Nasal Spray. Everyone in my family has their own nasal spray (because it is more sanitary not to share). At the first sign of a runny or stuffy nose, we start using the saline spray. It works fast to break up mucus and congestion, and in my opinion it helps keep cold congestion symptoms at a minimum from the get-go.
Saline also helps me clean my children’s noses better than a dry tissue or a wet washcloth. This tip is especially helpful for anyone dealing with younger kids, who tend to get messy noses when they are sick.

My oldest loves for me to use saline when he gets sick. Now my younger son is a different story! Nothing is going towards his nose! I love using a humidifier when the kids start with symptoms too! I think it helps a lot. We also use Vicks rub. I had read once that putting it on the bottom of the feet and covering them with socks actually helps with coughing. I feel like it helps!

I have heard that about the Vicks and socks, and always forget to try it when we are sick. I do want to see if it works – coughs are the worst at night. I use the JR Watkins menthol ointment, I wonder if it would work the same? Hmmm. I’ll have to try it out. Thanks for stopping by, Heather! —Nicole
