October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Pass It On. #PurplePurse

October 11, 2013 by Nicole

This post is part of a sponsored campaign with The Allstate Foundation and MomSelect. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #PurplePurse

purple purse #sponsoredDid you know that Domestic Violence affects 1 in 4 US women in their lifetime? That’s millions of women affected, but very few talking about it. It’s a sensitive subject to approach. In 2011, the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse was created because a purse represents the center of a woman’s financial domain and purple is the color utilized by domestic violence awareness campaigns.

Purple Purse helps provide a conversation starter about domestic violence. People can discuss domestic violence and pass information with their family and friends. Now in its third year, the Purple Purse is a way to place the power directly into people’s hands. Every time a Purple Purse is passed during October, Allstate will donate $5 (up to $350,000!) to the YWCA to support programs that assist domestic violence survivors and help end the cycle of abuse.

The YWCA and The Allstate Foundation have partnered with each other on many Domestic Violence initiatives. The YWCA is the largest provider of comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and their children nationwide. Rosario Dawson joined The Purple Purse as a spokesperson in 2012 and continues to be a champion of the campaign in 2013.

Thirteen hundred Purple Purses were given to Allstate employees and agents, celebrities, media, local YWCAs, bloggers, government officials, and domestic violence officials to pass along to their family, friends and neighbors. Each time one of the purses is checked in at purplepurse.com, Allstate will donate $5 to the YWCA.

Allstate has also launched an online campaign to raise money nationwide. Even if you are not able to pass a physical purse, you can pass a virtual purse at Purple Purse on Facebook. Allstate will donate $5 to the YWCA for every share and re-share.

I entered the purse code to pass a purple purse. I think it is very important to give women the confidence to speak up about domestic violence
