Several of my family members are military veterans. I am especially proud of my grandfather, who was a career helicopter pilot in the United States Army. My grandmother loves to tell the story about how my grandfather had been gone on tour for a year in Korea. My dad was a little boy of about 3 or 4 years old when his dad came home. Everyone assumed my dad knew who it was – but a few hours after my grandfather’s return, my grandmother said my dad came up to her and whispered, “Who is that man?”  We laugh about it now, but I think it is so sad that a little boy had not seen his father in so long that he didn’t even know him anymore.

Of course that story took place back in the “Dark Ages” before computers made long distance video communication possible. But I always remember family stories like that when I think of the sacrifices that our military men and women, and their families make so they can serve our country. They certainly give up a lot for the freedom we enjoy – and deserve every bit of thanks we can give and more.
