I was really good about wearing my Jawbone UP fitness tracker every day…until the Christmas holidays came along. I only meant to take a short break from tracking my daily activity level, but that turned into a long break. My good fitness habits were quickly going down the drain. I started to miss those morning wake-up calls (gentle vibrations on my wrist) from my Jawbone.
Thank goodness for New Year’s resolutions! I have challenged myself to wear my Jawbone UP every day and work out for longer periods of time. My usual exercise activities like running, biking and walking are a LOT more fun when there’s music involved. I thought about why listening to music gets me motivated to exercise, and I came up with a list of reasons.
- Music makes time fly. Workouts go by so much faster when I’m listening to tunes. It seems like I have only listened to 2 or 3 songs and 30 minutes have gone by!
- Music sets the intensity. If I listen to fast songs, I tend to exercise harder. So I wait until cool down time to listen to the slower songs. And turn on an upbeat song when I need to pick up the pace.
- Music makes workouts more fun. It’s a lot more enjoyable to exercise when I’m listening to my favorite songs or checking out new tunes.
Do you listen to music when you work out? What earbuds do you use? One problem people run into with earbuds and exercise is that the earbuds fall out and/or are uncomfortable to wear. Another thing I personally don’t like is when earbud cords get in the way.

Nancy Lustri (StyleDecor) says
Music is so important to a good workout. I can’t even get motivated without starting my music first. I see people wearing the fitness trackers, but I know I move a lot all day, so I don’t think I would wear one.
Pam says

Nicole Brady says
My husband has a Jawbone and wears it nonstop. I have a FitBit and a Nike FuelBand. Not sure I have room for another one!
Nicole says
I haven’t tried FitBit or FuelBand. Which one is your favorite? I’m thinking of getting my husband one of these but not sure which one he’d like the best.
Nicole Brady says
My FitBit actually doesn’t sync well and I often throw in the towel and just wear the FuelBand. I love it because it has a clock on it and my FitBit doesn’t. It’s also easier to see how far I’ve progressed for the day because it has a progress meter that is red to green as opposed to just a few notches.
Nicole says
Oh, thanks for letting me know about that, Nicole! That’s very helpful info. I have even thought I may pass my Jawbone (though I love it!) on to my husband so I can try something that lets me see my progress throughout the day. He probably wouldn’t care about that feature as much as I would. I like to know if I need to up my activity level without having to sync up.
Stacey Roberson says
I definitely have to listen to some music, or watch television, while I’m working out. Keeping myself entertained with something else makes the time go by and gets me motivated to keep going.
Maryann D. says
I would love to try this Jawbone. It looks like lots of fun and probably would motivate me more to work out. I would like it for walking also.
