5 places in your house with more germs than the toilet. #TryZep

November 10, 2014 by Nicole

I cleaned up with Zep Commercial® as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars. All opinions are my own based on my personal experiences using Zep products. #TryZep #SocialStars

Your toilet is NOT the germiest place in your house. There are other places that scientists say are much, much dirtier. I’m not writing this to totally gross you out. (Even though I admit, this is a shockingly gross fact.) But we all need to know where the most disgusting, bacteria-ridden areas are located in our homes so we can keep them clean. I’ll tell you what those places are in just a minute.

“There’s no place like home for the holidays.” (Germs feel this way, too!)

The holidays are right smack dab in the middle of cold and flu season. Holidays bring families and friends together, along with — you guessed it — all their germs. I don’t know about you, but I do not want to spend the holidays being sick. And since it’s easier to get rid of germs than relatives, keeping my home clean is the obvious solution.

I want to spend more time enjoying the holidays with my family and less time cleaning – that’s why I tried Zep products. I was totally impressed by Zep Commercial® Quick Clean Disinfectant. This stuff doesn’t just clean – it cleans FAST. It works faster than any other cleaner I have ever used in the past to kill germs like Cold and Flu viruses.

Zep Commercial Cleaners #TryZep

Clean, Disinfect and Deodorize in SECONDS.

Other disinfectants have to sit on surfaces for up to 10 minutes or more to kill germs. But Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant works much faster than that – disinfecting surfaces against bacteria like Staph in seconds, and effectively killing viruses like the Rhinovirus (aka cause of the Common Cold) in 2 minutes.

So what about those 5 places that are home to more bacteria than the toilet seat? Well, get your cleaning gloves on and meet me in the kitchen so I can show you…

1. Kitchen Countertops.

No matter what kind of countertops you have, you should wipe them down at least once daily. Our countertops come into contact with all sorts of things from the dirty bottoms of our shopping bags and purses to raw meats and unwashed produce. Just think of all the bacteria potentially living on your counters. Yuck!

Keep your kitchen countertops sparkling and germ-free with an antibacterial disinfectant cleaner.  Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant is safe for use on stainless steel, Formica®, glass, glazed porcelain, plastic, floors, walls, metal surfaces, glazed ceramic tile, sealed granite and sealed stone.

How to clean kitchen countertops: Spray countertops until entire surface area is covered with Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant. Wipe dry with a clean cloth. Follow up with a water rinse. *Note: A water rinse is required for any surface that may come into contact with food.

2. Kitchen sinks. Bacteria and viruses love to live in damp places like the sink. Did you know they thrive off of food on dirty plates and what we toss down the drain? This is my disgusting kitchen sink drain – it looks like this every day before I clean it. Crumbs, old food, yuck. I’m starting to believe those scientists about the toilet thing…

Kitchen Drain Dirty #TryZep

How to clean kitchen sink area: Spray  the sink basin, drain and fixtures with Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant to cut through the grime and kill bacteria. Use a toothbrush to scrub hard-to-reach places like the drain areas and around sink fixtures.

*Cleaning Tip: My sink and kitchen surfaces often have food stains and/or grease that needs to be removed before I can disinfect the area. In that case, I first spray and wipe the areas down with Zep Commercial® All-Around Oxy Cleaner & Degreaser. It’s a multipurpose cleaner with Oxy action to fight stains and a degreaser action to break up surface build-up. Once these areas are surface clean, I follow up with the Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant to kill germs.

3. Trash Can. Now this one makes sense to me as being a gross area. We put all our garbage here from old food to dirty diapers to used Kleenex. Of course this place is Disgustingville. I have to force myself to put on the cleaning gloves and give the kitchen trash can a thorough spray and wipe down. Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant is also a deodorizer, which means the trash can is clean AND smells a lot more pleasant.

4. Light switches. Light switches are easy spots to overlook at cleaning time. But they are another one of those places everyone touches with dirty hands. Lots of bacteria can be found in such a tiny area. Get rid of the germs with Zep products.

How to clean light switches: Spray a clean cloth with Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant and use it to apply Zep to the light switches and plate. Wipe again with a clean, dry cloth.

5. Door knobs. Everybody uses their hands on door knobs, making them prime areas for spreading dirt and germs.

How to clean door knobs: Spray Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant on the door knob and wipe dry with a cloth.

One last note about Zep All Around Oxy Cleaner & Degreaser:

This versatile cleaner cleans hard surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens AND it doubles as a carpet cleaner! Its oxy-powered stain remover gets rid of all sorts of stains from fruit juice to dirt.

Keep your home clean and disinfected this holiday season (and beyond) with Zep Commercial® cleaners. They give you a professional clean, fast. No matter what kind of dirty jobs you have to clean up, Zep Commercial® wants you to know that “We’ve Got a Zep For That.”

How often do you clean and disinfect your home? Do you do any special cleaning chores to prepare for holiday guests? What do you think about Zep cleaners?

I like the Zep Cleaners! I have never tried them, but I am always cleaning and disinfecting during cold and flu season. I think the toilet handle is a germ filled place that I always wipe down with disinfectant. I know light switches and refrigerator handles can be germy too. I always clean this. I will have to try Zep Cleaners they look like they work great.

Hi Julie – Yes those are all germy places that need to wipe down. Toilet handles – yuck, I’m glad you mentioned those! Another thing I really like about the disinfectant (and the oxy cleaner) is that they don’t have a strong odor. There’s really hardly any smell to them at all, but it’s nice not to have a harsh fume-y smell to them. Thank you for stopping by. Have a wonderful day — Nicole
