Fun and Friendly Calligraphy For Kids: A Hands-On Guide To Creative Lettering

January 19, 2018 by Nicole

My kids see me practice my calligraphy and brush pen lettering, and ask if they can learn how to do calligraphy, too. Fun and Friendly Calligraphy For Kids: A Hands-On Guide To Creative Lettering is a wonderful way to introduce them to one of my favorite hobbies! We received a copy of this book in exchange for our review.

Fun and Friendly Calligraphy For Kids - Beginner Book

Even though Fun and Friendly Calligraphy For Kids: A Hands On Guide To Creative Lettering is written especially for young readers, the simple explanations are perfect for people of all ages who want to learn calligraphy basics and even a little bit beyond.

If your child loves to doodle and write, chances are they will be interested in learning calligraphy and hand lettering. This book is a nice introduction to modern calligraphy. It starts with the basics every beginner needs to know like the terms and the tools needed. Other chapters introduce learning letter forms, developing a personal style, and practice guidelines. I would suggest making copies of the Practice Sheets instead of writing directly inside the book.

The final chapter gives practical ideas for fun ways to use calligraphy. It gives detailed instructions for projects like thank you notes, envelopes, signatures, logos, flourishing, and a whole lot more.

My 10-year-old son is interested in brush pen calligraphy, which is talked about in Chapter 5. I love how the author teaches how to do this with a Crayola marker! There’s no need to rush out and buy expensive brush pens to learn how to do brush pen lettering.

If you are wanting to practice calligraphy with a real calligraphy pen and nib, the author suggests an oblique calligraphy pen holder is best for beginners. She includes helpful photos and step-by-step directions for setting up the calligraphy pen with a nib.

An oblique calligraphy pen looks different from a straight pen holder. It has an extra piece on it to help beginners get the best angles while they learn. The first photo shows an example of what an inexpensive oblique calligraphy pen looks like in a set with six nibs. However, if you prefer you can use a straight calligraphy pen as shown in the second photo.

It’s really all personal preference and what you feel most comfortable holding. I actually ended up buying both kinds of pens so I could try them out. I switch out between the pen holders and nibs when I practice to keep things more interesting for myself. I think it is fun to experiment with different writing tools.

Are you ready to get started? Buy the book Fun and Friendly Calligraphy For Kids by Virginia Lucas Hart along with the basic tools and materials you need to learn calligraphy.
