This banana chocolate chip muffin recipe is a great way to get your banana bread fix faster than baking a loaf. My kids love banana muffins, and these muffins never last long at our house. Bake them with or without the chocolate chips – either way, this moist and sweet banana bread muffin recipe is a winner!
My family loves for me to bake banana bread. The kids get so happy whenever they see a fresh loaf of banana bread cooling on the counter, I always think I really should make it more often.
Banana bread muffins are an easy way to enjoy banana bread in a fraction of the baking time a full size loaf would take to bake. Plus, banana muffins are great for grab-and-go breakfasts and snacks.
A lot of people think that once bananas have turned brown to black, they should toss them out. But don’t throw away those overripe bananas! The best banana bread flavor comes from overripe (brown to black) bananas. You can even peel and freeze bananas to thaw and use later.
The addition of chocolate chips to the muffins adds a tiny bit of chocolaty flavor, which goes really nicely with the sweet banana flavors. If you want plain banana bread muffins, just leave out the chocolate chips. It tastes great either way.
One of my sons is a banana bread purist and does not want any extras in his banana bread muffins. So, I simply divide the batter in half and only mix chocolate chips into half of it. Be sure to only add half the amount of chocolate chips if you make it this way.
I almost always add a pinch of cinnamon to my banana bread recipes and this banana chocolate chip muffin recipe is no different. You don’t really notice the cinnamon, but we think it makes it better just by being there in the background.
- 4 Mashed Bananas *Use overripe bananas for best flavor
- 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/2 cup Butter (Softened)
- 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
- 2 Eggs (Slightly Beaten)
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 cup Milk Chocolate Chips
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line muffin pan with liners (or coat with nonstick cooking spray.)
- Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, use a mixer to cream together butter and brown sugar. Fold in the eggs, chocolate chips and mashed bananas until well blended.
- Add the banana mixture to the flour mixture and stir until moistened.
- Fill each muffin cup about 3/4 full with batter. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until done in the middle (test with a toothpick). Muffin tops will begin to brown. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to cooling rack or countertop.
This banana bread muffin recipe is perfect to make ahead and freeze. Take a frozen banana chocolate chip muffin or muffins out of the freezer and let thaw at room temperature before serving.
I line my muffin tin with paper cupcake liners for easy removal and clean-up. If I’m taking them to a party or somewhere I want them to look pretty for serving, I double up on the liners and sometimes even stick them in a third liner AFTER they are baked and cooled. Use paper baking cups that match or coordinate with your party colors.
Don’t have a muffin pan for baking muffins? Bake muffins in reusable silicone baking cups directly on a cookie sheet.
