It can be a challenge to keep kids active during the summer months. My kids have learned not to say they are bored unless they want me to assign them a chore. I sort of wish they hadn’t caught on to that trick because I was enjoying the extra help around the house!
I don’t expect my kids to be busy every hour of the day, but I do want them to have daily active time. I have learned that it is much easier to get my kids to be active when I do something with them. Exercising as a family can be a great bonding experience.
Sometimes it can be hard to come up with ideas for fun summer activities for kids and family. Ten ways I am helping my family stay active this summer are listed below. How do you keep your kids active during the summer?
Go for a walk or hike a trail. It’s an easy way to stay active because you can do it anytime, anywhere and it’s free.
Geocaching. This is a great way for families to explore the outdoors while going on a real-life treasure hunt.
Ride a bike. One of my kids’ favorite activities.
Chores. So what if the kids grumble about this one. Doing chores is a good activity that teaches them how to care for their home and belongings.
Swimming. If the pool or beach isn’t an option, create your own water fun at home. Let the kids run through the sprinklers. Get creative – you can’t go wrong when you add water to a hot summer day.
Play a sport. We have at least one of every type of ball ever invented at my house. Find out what sport interests your child and get the equipment they need to practice at home. Invite neighborhood kids over to play games.
Hit the playground. The park is a great way to get my kids’ energy out.
Plant a garden. I was surprised at how much my kids love helping out in the garden. We have flowers and vegetables. The best part is that my kids love to eat the veggies we grow.
Sign up for a family fun run. Do a little bit of research to find out if there are family fun runs in your area. Lots of places have Family 5K walks and runs, and many of those are fundraisers that support charitable causes. If you have a baby or little ones, family runs usually let you bring a stroller…so get out there and have fun!

Hi,
I just found your Website and loved it! There are some great articles on there that have given me inspiration for activities to do with my own children. I just wanted to thank you personally for the awesome work you’ve done. Great stuff indeed!
There’s actually an article on our website entitled “Children at Play: 10 Playhouse Games for your Kids” that I think you’ll also love for and may want to mention on your resources. Not to sound self-absorbed but we think that the topic is very interesting, eye-catching (the cool graphics will surely entice your readers), very timely, and is a perfect fit for your readers.
It’s great for ideas for parents to help get their children having fun outdoors and really enjoying themselves.
Let me know if you’re interested in seeing it and I’d be happy to forward along!
Best,
Kate
